What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ESA Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ESA Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, programming languages (such as C++, Python, or Java), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with embedded systems, real-time operating systems, and ESA-specific standards or tools like ECSS, as well as security clearance or certifications, are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary and international project teams. These skills are vital to ensure the reliability, safety, and innovation required in space missions and projects.

What are some common challenges faced by ESA Software Engineers when working on space missions?

ESA Software Engineers often work on highly complex and safety-critical systems for space missions, where reliability is paramount. One common challenge is adhering to rigorous standards and thorough documentation requirements, which can lengthen development cycles. Additionally, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—including hardware engineers and scientists from various countries—requires strong communication and project management skills. The work environment is dynamic, as engineers must frequently adapt to evolving mission objectives and emerging technologies.

What are ESA Software Engineers?

ESA Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain software systems used by the European Space Agency (ESA). Their work supports a wide range of space missions, including satellite operations, data analysis, scientific research, and mission control systems. They collaborate with scientists, engineers, and project managers to ensure that the software meets high standards of reliability, performance, and security. ESA Software Engineers often work with specialized technologies suited for space exploration and must adhere to strict quality assurance processes.

What is the difference between Esa Software Engineer vs Cloud Software Engineer?

AspectEsa Software EngineerCloud Software Engineer

Job description

www.offworld.ai
Robotics Test & Integration Engineer
Based in Pasadena, CA
OffWorld is a robotics startup working on developing amobilerobotic workforce for heavy industrial jobs on Earth, Moon, asteroids & Mars. OffWorld was founded by an experienced engineering team drawing on decades of tackling formidable engineering challenges at NASA, ESA,NOAA,MaxarTechnologies, CERN, Reaction Engines, SAFRAN, Surrey Satellites and Cisco.OffWorld'sfirst challenge is developing and maturing a modular robotic system forextremeenvironmentson Earth. Ourrobots willgo deeper underground and farthest on Earth than humans can, eliminate the need for humans to work in life-threatening environmentsin mining, construction, tunneling and other dangerousindustries, and dramatically reduce the environmental footprint and cost ofoperationsin key economies on Earth and beyond.
We have designed a modular robotic architecture that focuses on maximizing the commonality and reusability across components for fast deployment and optimization. Our robotic systems combine sensor information, cutting edge classical/machine learning (ML) algorithms and a robotics real-time system platform for control, decision making and execution.
OffWorld is seeking a talented and motivated Robotics Test & Integration Engineer to join a fast-moving team working to create advanced robotic and space systems. As a Robotics Test & Integration Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and executing testing and integration activities. These testing and integration activities span virtual tests (e.g., simulation), subsystem and system testing of robotic platforms at both testing facilities and field-deployed sites (open pit and subterranean mines). You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including robotics engineers, software developers, and project managers, to ensure that testing, integration, and overall development goals are met to the highest standards.
Responsibilities:
  • Test Planning and Execution: Create detailed test plans, test cases, and test scripts, ensuring adequate coverage of all robotic system components and functionalities. Coordinate and execute testing activities, including functional testing, regression testing, performance testing, and stress testing.
  • Test Automation: Identify opportunities for test automation and develop automated test scripts using appropriate tools and frameworks. Continuously improve the efficiency and effectiveness of testing processes through automation.
  • Test Reporting and Documentation: Analyze test results and prepare comprehensive test reports, documenting any defects, issues, or areas of improvement. Maintain detailed documentation of test procedures, configurations, and test environments.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including robotics engineers, software developers, mechanical engineers, and project managers, to understand project requirements, resolve issues, and ensure alignment between development and testing activities. Communicate testing progress, risks, and recommendations to stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in robotics testing methodologies, tools, and technologies. Identify areas for process improvement, propose innovative solutions, and drive the implementation of best practices.

As the ideal candidate you possess the following:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, robotics, or software / electrical / mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of engineering experience in (mobile and/or manipulator) robotics, or similar
  • 2+ years of hands-on testing of (mobile and/or manipulator) robots
  • Strong knowledge of robotic systems, sensors, perception, and control algorithms across software, hardware, and integrated-system development
  • Proficient in programming languages commonly used in robotics, such as C++, Python, or Java.
  • Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System) or similar robotics middleware.
  • Experience with robotics simulation environments, such as ROS Gazebo, and scenario-based regression testing
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, git, docker, and Linux command-line operations and debugging.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities, with the capability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks based on project goals and timelines.
  • Ability to travel regionally and internationally approximately 15% of the time.
  • Self-driven, passionate, and constantly pursuing knowledge and excellence.
