Job Summary
The ER Scribe Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the medical scribe team in the emergency room, ensuring accurate documentation and efficient clinical workflow. This role is responsible for interviewing, hiring, and training new staff, as well as conducting regular documentation audits and performance evaluations. The ER Scribe Supervisor is responsible for creating and maintaining 24/7 schedules for the 25+ members of the team. This role requires strong knowledge of medical documentation, billing requirements, and overall clinical workflow. Collaborative communication between clinical and nonclinical staff is required to optimize efficiency and ensure documentation requirements are met.
Duties
  • Supervise and manage a team of medical scribes in the emergency room as well as perform duties as a medical scribe.
  • Interview, hire, and train new medical scribes
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive training guides specific to emergency room documentation and workflow.
May occasionally work Scribe shifts to remain familiar with scribe responsibilities and workflow as well as maintain knowledge of the medical field
  • Educate on compliance with HIPAA and patient confidentiality.
  • Assess scribe competency and provide ongoing education and support. Provide additional resources or enhance training through one-on-one mentorship as needed.
  • Support employee understanding, engagement, and retention.
  • Develop and maintain scribe schedules to ensure appropriate staffing 24/7.
  • Receive sick calls and coordinate coverage for any scheduling gaps.
  • Resolve scheduling conflicts in a timely manner.
  • Track attendance and productivity.
  • Review and approve employee timecards, monitor overtime, and missed meals.
  • Monitor documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with billing requirements.
  • Perform chart audits to evaluate documentation quality and provide constructive feedback to enhance documentation or bridge knowledge gaps.
  • Serve as a point of contact between physicians, scribes, and EHR team.
  • Review feedback from providers to enhance scribe training and understanding.
  • Collaborate with physicians and EHR staff to optimize workflow, improve provider efficiency, and ensure thorough documentation.
  • Test new EHR templates or functions and provide feedback on effectiveness or workflow.
  • Develop a welcoming environment and foster growth within the team of scribes.
  • Monitor employee productivity and professionalism, and conduct regular performance evaluations. Provide coaching or address performance concerns.
  • Effectively communicate updates to all staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Current American Heart Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required
  • Associate's degree or higher required. Degree in healthcare, biology, or other related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of prior scribe experience required.
  • Thorough knowledge of medical documentation and clinical workflow required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology required.
  • Experience in emergency room preferred.
  • Prior supervisor or leadership experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, time management, critical thinking, and conflict-resolution skills required.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer proficiency required.
  • Ability to type 40+ WPM while maintaining accuracy is required.
