Job description

Reports To: Project Manager

Status: Full-time, Exempt

Ready to bridge the gap between design engineering and project leadership? We are seeking an Assistant Project Manager to join our Land Development team.

In this role, you will work directly alongside Senior Project Managers to drive high-profile commercial land development projects from concept through construction. You'll play a key part in site layout, grading, utility design, municipal permitting, and client coordination, all while developing the technical and management skills needed to run your own project portfolio.

What You'll Bring:
  • Active Civil Professional Engineer (PE) license (recently licensed or 4–6 years of progressive civil design experience).
  • Proven background in commercial site design, storm drainage, grading, and utility systems.
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D and local permitting/entitlement processes.
  • Strong communication skills and an interest in team leadership and client management.

Core Responsibilities
  • Assist the PM in managing and overseeing all team activities, including production documents, client management, internal team management, and project financials in partnership with Project Manager. Assist in the scheduling process.
  • Prepare proposals, work order amendments, and subconsultant agreements for PM review and execution.
    • Attend client meetings. Engage in guided client interactions with the PM to understand goals and ensure the design meets their needs and specifications.
  • Responsible for invoice task management, including change orders and additional services. Work with the PM to ensure accurate client invoicing.
  • Responsible for the technical engineering components of the project
    • Provide quality assurance and control. Coach technical staff on project issues and general engineering principles.
    • Assist the PM in assigning project tasks to team members promptly, provide clear direction on tasks and expectations on deliverables, and establish clear deadlines with team member affirmation.
    • Conduct team status meetings weekly.
    • Responsible for working with the PM to coordinate resource management for the project team.
    • Responsible for managing permit submittal processes and coordination with review authorities. Ability to determine these requirements quickly as project locations vary.
  • Increase the team's overall effectiveness by developing staff, aligning individual team member strengths with appropriate project tasks, identifying potential obstacles (both internal and external), and performing reviews.
  • Balance staffing and workload through collaboration with the team and PM
  • Monitor the work of team members to ensure that they adhere to industry standards and best practices.
    • Conduct regular 1:1's with staff and performance reviews in alignment with the performance management cycle.
  • Responsible for completing personal timecards accurately and reviewing and approving associate timecards on time.
  • Collaborate and assist the PM in developing future business and building relationships with existing clients
  • Communicate effectively (written and verbal) internally (interdepartmental and intradepartmental) and externally (inclusive of clients, sub-consultants, municipalities).
  • Participate in the execution of strategic initiatives.
  • Be an ambassador for EPS at industry events and conferences. May require attending project team and public meetings after hours.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Achieve a 60-70% Billable Utilization Rate. Non-billable activities include company & team meetings, professional development, community involvement, innovation time, culture & engagement activities, learning, and training.
  • May manage $50-$500k in projects annually and up to 1-2 staff members.
Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in civil, Environmental, or related Engineering field.
  • Professional Engineering License.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience with land development projects with a proven record of success as a project engineer and solid technical background.
  • Professional knowledge of Microsoft Office, Civil 3D, Bluebeam, and Pipe Networks.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills and a high level of emotional intelligence with the ability to interface both in person and remotely (videoconferencing, phone, etc.).
  • Must demonstrate the ability to closely monitor project progress from a financial and schedule front with an eye for identifying scope creep elements.
  • Promote a positive teamwork environment, and lead and motivate a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering design processes, plan set preparation, and obtaining agency approvals.
  • Exceptional organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work accurately, follow procedures and schedules, and prioritize multiple tasks for highly technically capable individuals in a complex matrix environment.
  • Effectively delegates tasks (production and administrative) to allow for an increased focus on management tasks.
  • Valid driver's license and automobile insurance.
Physical Requirements
  • Required to stand, walk, and sit.
  • The position may require a visit to project sites occasionally.
  • The position requires a normal range of hearing.
  • The employee must be able to lift 40 lbs. occasionally.
  • Requires prolonged sitting with 15% of the time spent bending and reaching.
  • Must have manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard and calculator.
  • Noise levels are consistent with a standard office environment.
