Epac (Exchange Protein directly Activated by cAMP) proteins are intracellular sensors that are activated by the molecule cyclic AMP (cAMP). Unlike protein kinase A (PKA), another cAMP target, Epac proteins function as guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) for the Rap family of small GTPases. They play important roles in various cellular processes such as cell adhesion, secretion, and gene expression. Epac proteins are involved in cardiovascular, neurological, and metabolic functions, making them a subject of interest in biomedical research.
