What is environmental sustainability?

Environmental sustainability refers to responsible practices and policies that ensure natural resources are used and managed in ways that maintain ecological balance and meet current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. This involves reducing pollution, conserving resources, protecting ecosystems, and promoting renewable energy. Professionals in environmental sustainability work to develop solutions and implement strategies that minimize environmental impact across various industries and communities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in environmental sustainability?

To thrive in Environmental Sustainability, you need a solid understanding of environmental science, data analysis, and sustainability principles, often supported by a relevant degree such as environmental studies or engineering. Familiarity with environmental impact assessment tools, carbon footprint calculators, and certifications like LEED or ISO 14001 is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help professionals effectively advocate for and implement sustainable practices. These skills and qualifications are essential for driving positive environmental change and ensuring organizational compliance with sustainability goals.

How do professionals in environmental sustainability typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Professionals in environmental sustainability often work closely with departments such as operations, supply chain, facilities, and corporate communications to implement green initiatives and ensure compliance with environmental regulations. They may lead cross-functional teams to develop sustainability strategies, monitor resource usage, and report on environmental impact. Collaboration is key, as sustainability efforts often require input and support from multiple areas of the organization to be effective and measurable.

  • Support operational compliance and continuous improvement projects to reduce energy, GHG emissions, water use, and waste. Support ISO14001 and 50001 certifications
  • Lead Scope 3 roadmap and life cycle analysis (LCA) projects and to help establish systems and processes for Scope 3 and LCA.
  • Oversee strategic SBTi process and 3rd party validation of data, and develop new sustainability targets, including net zero ambitions.
  • Prepare and deliver data summaries and presentations on sustainability performance and compliance to stakeholders.
  • Participate in trade associations and mentor site EHS staff to foster a strong global sustainability culture.

Driving Innovation. Empowering Progress. Sustaining Tomorrow.

Your boarding pass (qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, civil or chemical or environmental engineering or science, environmental studies, or equivalent technical degree.
  • 7+ years of experience leading and/or supporting corporate sustainability programs (e.g., carbon accounting, Scope 1, 2, 3 reporting/validation, waste reduction and water stewardship) and environmental sustainability compliance.
  • Demonstrated experience in compiling, reviewing, analyzing, and managing environmental sustainability data (e.g., Scopes 1, 2, 3 emissions, waste, water consumption, product carbon footprint).
  • Ability to lead and manage multiple technical projects/tasks.
  • At least three years of experience in voluntary disclosures, including but not limited to CDP, EcoVadis, TCFD, etc.
  • The ability to travel up to 25%, including global travel, with no travel limitations throughout Hexcel’s operating footprint.
