The Opportunity:
Tetra Tech invites you to consider a rewarding opportunity within our Colorado Springs or Lakewood, Colorado offices as an Environmental Compliance Engineer. This position requires the candidate to work in the office regularly with our team for the first 6 months to facilitate integration into projects, form relationships with fellow employees with a range of backgrounds, and more fully and quickly integrate into our team. After the first 6 months, this position will allow a flexible hybrid work setting and schedule to be worked out with your supervisor.
We are seeking an energetic individual interested in pursuing and supporting a variety of challenging projects. The successful candidate will work closely with Principal and Project Engineers, Scientists, and Project Managers on a variety of mining projects. Duties will include both office work and field work. Technical writing skills and the ability to conduct detailed reviews of permitting obligations and compliance status skills are critical for the successful candidate. Experience with environmental management at mine sites (including understanding permitting and environmental concerns typical of pits, waste rock dumps, tailings impoundments, heap leach pads, processing facilities, solid and liquid hazardous and non-hazardous waste storage, water management structures and water treatment) is necessary. Experience with environmental permitting in more than three of the following jurisdictions is desired: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, or Canada. The position will require some travel, including international travel, to complete site inspections and reconnaissance.

Essential Job Functions:
In this role the successful candidate will work primarily with our mine environmental permitting, reclamation, and management team, supporting:
Review and update client permit applications, including collaborating with design teams to develop permitting documentation for active mine sites.
Review environmental permitting obligations for water use and discharge (both surface and groundwater) for various jurisdictions in the western United States (particularly Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming) and internationally.
Support environmental compliance audits including review of environmental permits, regulations, and work completed to satisfy compliance obligations.
Develop summaries of permitting obligations for integration into feasibility studies and permit handbook development to support active mine sites, expansions, and new mine development.
Develop summaries of permitting needs and status for environmental due diligence projects.
Compare environmental monitoring results (air, water, soil, sediment) to applicable standards and develop conclusions of materiality of findings.
Review environmental management documents and identify material risks of environmental non-compliance with permit obligations.
Review project details to identify project components which may required permit modifications.
Project work will also include supporting active mine and abandoned mine site projects including environmental site inspections.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Graduate of a 4-year accredited university in civil or environmental engineering.
12+ years of experience.
Must be computer literate and have knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
An interest in working with active mining clients as they conduct operations and environmental management plans, including supporting mine phase transitions (expansion or closure) is a must.
Strong problem solving, time management, and written and verbal communication skills are required.
Ability to learn about mine site environmental concerns and integrate new skills and software programs (Teams, Project).
A Pre-employment drug screening in compliance with state regulations is required.
Must possess a valid driver's license with a clean driving record without restrictions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education and career interests should be related to environmental aspects of the mining industry.
PE preferred.
MSHA and/or OSHA HAZWOPER certification preferred.
Spanish speaking is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
Travel in-state and out-of-state and safely perform field work at remote sites required (approx. 25% of travel required).
Must be able to walk across uneven terrain, including uneven ground, in all weather conditions including rain, snow, hot/cold weather (<40 degrees and >95 degrees).
Field work will include remaining stationary for long periods of time, walking, lifting, bending, sitting. Office work will consist of prolonged periods sitting or standing at a desk and using a computer.
Work Environment / Environmental Factors:
Based out of Lakewood, CO or Colorado Springs, CO office. This position requires the candidate to work in the office regularly with our team for the first 6 months to facilitate integration into projects, form relationships with fellow employees with a range of backgrounds, and more fully and quickly integrate into our team. After the first 6 months, this position will allow a flexible hybrid work setting and schedule to be worked out with your supervisor. This arrangement is subject to review and may change at the company's discretion.
Additional Information:
Full-time, Monday through Friday work scheduled (40 hours). Occasionally extended hours may be required based on project and/or client needs.
Work will be performed in an office and field setting.
Target salary range: $104,000 annually to $119,000 annually. Please note that Tetra Tech considers various factors in determining pay, including but not limited to: education, relevant and demonstrated work experience in the role, skills, geographic location, qualifications, certifications, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the business.
