The Environmental Manager reports to the Environmental Health, Safety (EHS), and Security Manager. This position is responsiblefor the design, development, and implementation of programs supportinglocal, state and regulatory requirements for Environmental Compliance (EPA, MDE). Provides direct supervision to the Environmental Engineer and Environmental Project Manager in support of Operations and Operational Readiness, including Risk Assessment (HIRA) and Environmental Compliance. Provides strategic leadership for environmental compliance, permits, waste management, sustainability initiatives, regulatory interactions, and environmental management systems across a complex chemical manufacturing operation

Responsibilities
  • Provides leadership for the expansion and optimization of environmental permits and programs, managing complex projects such as landfill operations, air permit modifications, waste management strategies, and regulatory compliance solutions that enable site operations and future growth.
  • Oversee all environmental (Title V, NPDES, SWPPP, Oil Management) permitting, hazardous and non-hazardous waste management including the Curtis Bay landfill operations
  • Ensure Environmental Regulatory Compliance by managing Title V air permits, NPDES permits, SWPPP requirements, hazardous waste programs, and other federal, state, and local environmental obligations.
  • Lead Environmental Management Systems and Auditing through compliance calendars, inspections, environmental audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives to maintain regulatory compliance and Responsible Care performance.
  • Manage Waste, Emissions, and Environmental Risk by overseeing hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal, emissions control programs, pollution prevention efforts, and environmental impact reduction projects.
  • Provide Environmental Leadership and Agency Interface by serving as the primary site contact for regulators, coordinating environmental reporting, supporting permit negotiations, and maintaining relationships with agencies such as EPA and state environmental departments.Develop Environmental Talent and Sustainability Programs by identifying training needs, building environmental competency within operations and maintenance teams, and leading sustainability, resource conservation, and environmental performance improvement initiatives.
Physical Requirements and Environment
  • Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials
  • Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.
  • Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator
  • Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM discipline.
  • 7 or more years of manufacturing, chemical industry, or related experience
  • Supervisory and leadership experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and electronic safety management or action-tracking systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 10+ years of Environmental experience in chemical manufacturing, refinery, pharmaceutical, heavy industrial, or high-hazard operations.
  • Experience working in a union environment and partnering with joint labor-management safety committees.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, manage competing priorities, and drive sustainable improvement through influence and accountability.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and within a team environment (leading and participating) with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions
  • High level of personal motivation, with a drive for ownership and accountability in performance of job responsibilities
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels in the organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, sound judgment, and ability to influence without direct authority.
