Environmental Engineering Research information

What is an environmental engineering research?

An Environmental Engineering Research job involves studying and developing solutions to environmental challenges such as pollution, waste management, and sustainable resource use. Researchers in this field analyze data, conduct experiments, and design technologies to improve environmental quality and public health. They often work in academic institutions, government agencies, or private industries to advance knowledge and implement innovative engineering solutions.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in environmental engineering research?

In Environmental Engineering Research, daily responsibilities often include designing experiments, collecting and analyzing environmental samples, using computer models to simulate environmental processes, and preparing technical reports or presentations. Researchers typically collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, such as scientists, engineers, and regulatory experts, to develop and test innovative solutions for issues like water treatment, pollution control, or sustainable development. The work often involves both laboratory and field components, offering variety and practical experience. Staying informed about emerging environmental regulations and new technologies is also a vital part of the job to ensure compliance and drive innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in environmental engineering research, and why are they important?

To thrive in Environmental Engineering Research, a strong background in environmental science, engineering principles, and data analysis is required, usually supported by an advanced degree in environmental or civil engineering. Familiarity with modeling software (such as MATLAB or AutoCAD), environmental monitoring instruments, and certifications like EIT (Engineer-in-Training) are valuable assets. Superior analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills enable researchers to collaborate successfully and present findings. These competencies are essential for designing sustainable solutions, addressing environmental challenges, and advancing research initiatives.

What can I do with a PhD in environmental engineering research?

A PhD in environmental engineering research prepares individuals for advanced roles in academia, government agencies, and private industry, focusing on developing sustainable solutions, environmental policy, and innovative technologies. Graduates often work as researchers, consultants, or environmental scientists, utilizing skills in data analysis, modeling, and environmental assessment. Certification or licensing may be required for certain positions, and familiarity with tools like GIS and environmental software is beneficial.

Job description

Boon Logic is hiring a Research Software Engineer to support advanced R&D and rapid prototyping initiatives alongside our CTO and senior technical leadership.

This role is ideal for a software engineer who enjoys solving difficult technical problems, building prototypes quickly, and working in collaborative technical environments. You''ll spend more time in algorithm discussions and whiteboard sessions than in deployment pipelines or enterprise software maintenance.

This is an onsite role in Minneapolis working directly with a small, technical team. Due to program requirements, this role requires U.S. citizenship and eligibility to work in a NOFORN (No Foreign Nationals) environment.

Compensation: $95,000–$125,000, based on experience

What You''ll Be Doing

  • Rapid prototyping and exploratory software development
  • Collaborating directly with technical leadership on advanced concepts and algorithm development
  • Participating in frequent whiteboard and technical design sessions
  • Building research-oriented tools and proof-of-concept implementations
  • Working primarily in Python and/or C++ in Linux environments
  • Contributing to technical R&D efforts involving data analysis, machine learning, and high-performance computation

Role Breakdown
75% Research and Prototyping | 25% Development | 0% Deployment / DevOps

Requirements

  • B.S. or B.A. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or related technical field
  • 3–5 years of industry experience in software engineering or related R&D work
  • Strong proficiency in either Python or C++
  • Strong mathematical and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Experience with rapid prototyping
  • Linux and Git proficiency
  • Must be located in the Greater Minneapolis area

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to machine learning, signal processing, or scientific computing
  • Experience in technical or research-driven environments
  • Familiarity with high-performance or low-latency systems
  • Comfortable operating in fast-moving, ambiguous R&D environment
  • Familiarity with Mathematica a plus

We''re looking for engineers who are curious, technically sharp, collaborative, and capable of turning concepts into working prototypes quickly.
