What is the difference between Environmental Engineer vs Environmental Scientist?

AspectEnvironmental EngineerEnvironmental Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's in environmental engineering or related field; often licensed as Professional Engineer (PE)Bachelor's or master's in environmental science or related field; no licensing required
Work EnvironmentDesigning solutions, working on projects, often in field and lab settingsResearch and data analysis, primarily in labs or offices
Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, government agencies, manufacturing industriesResearch institutions, government agencies, environmental consulting

Environmental Engineers focus on designing and implementing solutions to environmental problems, often working on projects that require engineering design and compliance. Environmental Scientists primarily conduct research, analyze data, and assess environmental conditions. While both roles require a background in environmental studies, Engineers typically need engineering credentials and licensing, whereas Scientists focus on research and data analysis. Both roles are vital in environmental protection but serve different functions within the industry.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior-level environmental engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and advanced certifications can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries or managerial roles. Such compensation often reflects leadership responsibilities, project management, or work in consulting firms with large clients.

Do environmental engineers earn well?

Environmental engineers typically earn competitive salaries that vary by experience, location, and industry. According to industry data, the median annual wage is above the national average for engineering roles, and salaries can increase with advanced certifications and specialized skills in areas like water treatment or pollution control.

What are environmental engineers?

Environmental engineers are professionals who use principles of engineering, soil science, biology, and chemistry to develop solutions to environmental problems. They work to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and control of water and air pollution. Environmental engineers often design systems for water and air purification, manage hazardous waste, and ensure organizations comply with environmental regulations. Their work helps protect the environment and human health by minimizing the impact of human activities.

What kinds of jobs do environmental engineers do?

Environmental engineers design and implement solutions to environmental problems, such as pollution control, waste management, and water treatment. They often work in consulting firms, government agencies, or industrial settings, using tools like GIS and modeling software, and may require certifications like the Professional Engineer license.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Engineer, you need a solid background in environmental science, engineering principles, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in environmental, civil, or chemical engineering. Familiarity with modeling software (such as AutoCAD and GIS), environmental impact assessment tools, and professional certifications like the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication set outstanding candidates apart in this field. These skills ensure engineers can design solutions that protect public health and the environment while meeting regulatory and project requirements.

What Do Environmental Engineers Do?

Environmental engineers research and develop systems and solutions to environmental problems. They have backgrounds in soil science, chemistry, biology, and engineering, which they apply to the production of architectural systems that address air pollution, water conservation, recycling, sustainability, and public health.

Job description

Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

The Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and standardizing polishing processes through structured experimentation, statistical analysis, and hands-on process development. This role will lead Design of Experiments (DOE) efforts to identify and control key process variables, improve repeatability, and establish validated operating procedures.

This position supports both manufacturing and commercial teams by translating application and customer requirements into controlled, scalable process solutions. The engineer also supports lab-based development activities in collaboration with a Process Technician who assists with operational experimentation, data collection, and testing.

ITAR REQUIREMENTS

This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which restricts access to export-controlled information to U.S. persons. A U.S. person is generally defined as a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful permanent resident, or others specifically authorized under U.S. export regulations. General work authorization (e.g., work permit or EAD) or visa sponsorship does not meet ITAR requirements.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Process Development & Design of Experiments (DOE)

  • Execute structured Design of Experiments (DOE) to identify and evaluate critical process variables impacting performance.
  • Develop statistically valid experimental plans for polishing applications across multiple iterations.
  • Perform statistical analysis (e.g., regression, ANOVA, response analysis) to identify key drivers of performance, repeatability, and quality.
  • Establish and validate optimal process operating windows and standardized process conditions.
  • Maintain a structured database of process conditions, experimental results, and validated parameters for reference and scalability.
  • Improve process consistency, yield, and performance through iterative experimentation and refinement.

Technical Collaboration & Process Execution

  • Interface with Product Management and customers to understand application requirements and translate them into technical process parameters.
  • Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis for performance issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to expand internal expertise in process control.
  • Work in collaboration with a Process Technician to execute DOE plans, including sample preparation, testing, and data collection.
  • Ensure accurate documentation, repeatability, and adherence to experimental protocols.
  • Support effective lab operations to ensure timely execution of development work and experimental priorities.
  • Contribute to building deeper technical understanding of variables to improve process control and capability.
Requirements:

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Proficient in a Windows-based environment with advanced Microsoft Excel skills for data analysis, experimental tracking, and reporting of DOE results.
  • Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems and production planning tools such as Global Shop.
  • Strong prioritization and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced production environment.
  • Strong professionalism and effective written and oral communication, both internally and externally.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Collaborate well cross-functionally with sales, product development, engineering, quality, and customers.
  • Demonstrate a hands-on, self-starting attitude with strong interpersonal and technical skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Robotics, Materials, Chemical, Production Engineering, Physics, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on manufacturing/engineering experience
  • Experience utilizing Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies to support process development, optimization, validation, and root cause analysis through statistical analysis and data-driven decision making.
  • Preferred experience operating, debugging, and working with electro-mechanical equipment used in fiber optic cable assembly, including polishing, curing, cleaving, and inspection with optical test equipment such as microscopes, interferometers, and signal testers.
  • Industry experience in fiber optic polishing, precision machining, or grinding processes involving materials such as glass, ceramics, optics, and metals is preferred.
