About this Job Join DOTD as an Environmental Engineer At the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD), our mission is to plan, design, construct, and maintain a safe and reliable transportation system that supports economic growth and improves the quality of life for the people of Louisiana. DOTD is seeking an Environmental Engineer to perform environmental investigations, engineering analyses, technical studies, and environmental document preparation for transportation projects across Louisiana. This position supports the development and delivery of transportation projects by evaluating environmental impacts, coordinating with internal and external partners, and helping ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws, rules, and regulations.

This position is well-suited for candidates who enjoy problem-solving, field work, data-driven analysis, environmental documentation, technical writing, and applying engineering principles to infrastructure projects that impact communities statewide. This position requires a driver's license to participate in field investigations, technical meetings, public involvement activities, and agency coordination events. Job Duties and Other Information The duties and level of responsibility may vary depending on the level at which the selected applicant is hired. This position may be filled from the Engineer Intern level up to the Engineer 5 level. At the lower levels, work is performed under close supervision with on-the-job training provided by senior engineers.

As the employee progresses, work becomes more independent and may include responsibility for more complex environmental studies, technical reviews, project coordination, and recommendations related to environmental impacts. Job Duties may include, but are not limited to: Performs environmental investigations and engineering analyses for transportation projects. Prepares, reviews, and edits environmental documents, technical reports, exhibits, and related project materials.

Evaluates project impacts involving environmental considerations such as air, noise, hazardous waste, and site conditions. Performs or assists with air/noise modeling and Phase I Environmental Site Assessments. Reviews consultant proposals, studies, invoices, and technical documents for accuracy and completeness.

Coordinates with DOTD project teams, consultants, resource agencies, permitting agencies, local officials, and other stakeholders. Supports public involvement activities, including meeting preparation, attendance, exhibits, and documentation. Provides technical assistance and guidance to lower-level engineering staff, depending on the level hired.

Learns, interprets, and applies applicable environmental laws, rules, regulations, and DOTD procedures. Performs other duties as assigned, including emergency or disaster support activities. Position-Specific Details: Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and agency-wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.

Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Engineer Intern 1, Engineer Intern 2, Engineer 3, Engineer 4, or Engineer 5. The level at which the vacancy is filled will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant. Compensation: Additional compensation may be considered for applicants who possess extraordinary job-related qualifications or credentials in accordance with State Civil Service Rule 6.5(g) and DOTD policy
