To thrive as an Environmental Engineer Intern, you typically need a foundational understanding of environmental science, engineering principles, and coursework toward a relevant degree. Familiarity with software like AutoCAD, GIS, and environmental modeling tools, as well as compliance knowledge such as OSHA or EPA regulations, is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel in both fieldwork and reporting. These skills enable accurate data analysis, regulatory compliance, and successful collaboration on projects that protect public health and the environment.

What types of projects and tasks can an environmental engineer intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Environmental Engineer Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as assisting with environmental site assessments, collecting and analyzing samples (soil, air, or water), supporting environmental compliance efforts, and preparing technical reports or documentation. Interns often collaborate with experienced engineers, scientists, and field technicians, gaining exposure to both office-based and on-site tasks. This hands-on experience is valuable for developing practical skills and understanding the processes involved in environmental protection and sustainability projects.

What does an environmental engineer intern do?

An Environmental Engineer Intern assists professional engineers in designing, planning, and implementing projects that aim to improve environmental quality. Job description

Who We Are
Serval is an AI-native automation platform transforming how enterprises operate. We build intelligent agents that understand real-world workflows and execute them end-to-end - replacing manual processes and rigid legacy systems with adaptive, learning software. Founded in early 2024, Serval is already trusted by companies like Fox, Notion, Perplexity, Vercel, and Brex to automate high-volume, high-friction operational work across their organizations.
At the core of Serval is an agentic AI platform that turns natural language into production-grade workflows. Our agents don't just respond to requests - they reason, take action across systems, and continuously improve with usage. What began with operational use cases has quickly evolved into a horizontal AI automation layer used across IT, HR, Finance, Security, Legal, and Engineering.
Our mission is to eliminate repetitive, manual work across the enterprise and give teams leverage through intelligent automation. Long term, we're building the universal AI operations layer - a system of agents that sits across business functions and runs the workflows that keep modern companies moving.
We're backed by leading investors including Sequoia Capital, Redpoint Ventures, Meritech, First Round, General Catalyst, Elad Gil, and others.
Role Overview
As a Software Engineer Intern, Backend at Serval, you'll work directly on core parts of our platform as we build AI-powered automation for modern IT teams. This is a hands-on internship where you'll contribute real production code, learn how an early-stage product is built, and see your work shipped to customers.
What You'll Do
  • Work closely with our CTO and founding engineering team to build and extend backend product capabilities.
  • Contribute to backend services that power Serval's AI-driven automation workflows.
  • Learn how to design, implement, and test scalable systems in a production environment.
  • Help us move quickly toward key product milestones, including shipping and iterating on core platform features.

What You'll Need
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field with an expected graduation date between Dec 2026 - 2028
  • Strong fundamentals in computer science (data structures, algorithms, systems).
  • Familiarity with at least one backend programming language (Go, Java, Python, or similar).
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to learn quickly in a fast-moving environment.
  • Excitement about startups, ownership, and building products from the ground up.

Nice to Have
  • Exposure to modern backend or cloud technologies (APIs, microservices, containers, or cloud platforms).
  • Experience with any part of our stack: Go, gRPC, Kubernetes, React, TypeScript, AWS, or Terraform.
  • Previous internship or project experience at a startup or fast-paced team.

What We Offer
  • Impact: Be a key player in shaping the success of our product and company.
  • Growth: Build a fundamentally new AI product offering with the support of our experienced team and investors. Grow rapidly with the company.
  • Culture: Join a culture that values innovation, ownership, accountability, and fun.
