Environmental Manager - Decatur, IL
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Environmental Manager to lead environmental oversight and compliance for our Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) projects. This role is responsible for ensuring that all aspects of CCS operations, including capture, injection, monitoring, and closure are conducted in full compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. The manager will play a pivotal role in permitting, reporting, and coordination with regulatory agencies such as the EPA, DOE, and state environmental authorities. This position will report to the Decatur Area Environmental Manager and be located with in the Decatur, IL complex.
Main Responsibilities:
  • Lead the environmental permitting process for Class VI injection wells and associated CCS infrastructure
  • Interpret and ensure compliance with federal and state CCS regulations, including but not limited to the Clean Air Act (CAA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), and the Illinois Safe CCS Act
  • Prepare and review documentation for air permitting, UIC permits, Illinois Safe CCA Act, and Environmental Impact Statements/Assessments (EIS/EAs). Maintain an electronic EHS database and update as new permits are issued
  • Develop, implement, and oversee Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) plans
  • Serve as the primary environmental point of contact for CCS projects across capture and storage phases
  • Lead cross-functional teams in the development and implementation of CCS-related environmental programs
  • Coordinate with engineering, legal, sustainability, and external consultants to ensure alignment with environmental goals and permitting milestones
  • Represent the company in communications with regulatory agencies, community stakeholders, and industry groups
  • Conduct internal audits and environmental performance reviews for CCS operations
  • Lead incident investigations and corrective actions related to environmental deviations or noncompliance

  • BS/BA degree in Engineering, Geology, Environmental Management or another related program preferred
  • 5+ years' experience with progressive responsibility preferably in a process industrial environment, ideally in the oil and gas or carbon capture industries
  • Knowledge and experience with Illinois and federal air quality permitting and compliance requirements
  • Familiarity with technologies used in monitoring Class VI wells
  • Familiarity with environmental justice regulations and stakeholder outreach
  • Must communicate effectively with engineering and operations technical staff, legal counsel, and regulatory agency personnel
  • This position requires the ability to work in a variety of conditions such as an office environment, indoors/outdoors, hot/cold weather as well as physical demands such as standing, kneeling, and sitting for prolonged periods of time, climbing stairs/ladders and the ability to work in confined spaces in a variety of environmental conditions
