Entry-level opportunity for motivated individuals seeking a career in the power industry!

Job Title: Distribution Field Technician (Dayton)

Job Description

The Distribution Field Technician supports the safe and reliable operation of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems by performing field inspections, measurements, and data collection. This role is based out of a Dayton-area office and focuses on visual inspections, mapping low voltage distribution networks, identifying and documenting electrical equipment, and preparing minor work orders and reports. It is well suited to individuals who enjoy working outdoors, appreciate structured, clock-in/clock-out environments, and want a role that is less physically demanding than traditional manual labor while still being hands-on and field-focused.

Responsibilities

  • Report to the Dayton-area office daily to receive assignments and coordinate field activities.
  • Conduct visual inspections of overhead and underground electrical distribution equipment to support system operation, maintenance, and safety.
  • Compile accurate field data and prepare minor work orders based on inspection findings.
  • Maintain detailed and organized reports of distribution equipment and field activities.
  • Measure and map Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) systems, ensuring all components are properly documented.
  • Identify and record electrical equipment installed on poles, including all relevant attributes needed for system records.
  • Perform system inventories and audits of electrical distribution assets to support asset management and planning.
  • Support joint use management activities by documenting attachments and related facilities on poles.
  • Assist with permitting-related field tasks, including collecting location and equipment information as required.
  • Perform pad-mount equipment inspections and related maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Conduct ground-line pole inspections and pole analysis activities using prescribed methods and tools.
  • Support metering and apparatus services and lighting audits by collecting field data and verifying installed equipment.
  • Use laptops, tablets, GPS units, and other electronic devices to collect, enter, and update field data in real time.
  • Operate equipment such as height sticks and range finders to take accurate measurements of clearances and equipment locations.
  • Develop and apply a working knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), electric utility construction standards, and communication facilities as they relate to distribution systems.
  • Follow established safety procedures and field protocols while working around electrical distribution infrastructure.
  • Achieve weekly billable goals and productivity targets as defined by project guidelines and supervision.
  • Collaborate with field partners and office-based staff to ensure accurate, timely, and complete project deliverables.
  • Travel to field locations, generally within approximately one hour of the office, to perform assigned inspection and data collection tasks.

Essential Skills

  • Experience performing data collection and field data analysis in a structured environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including the ability to use tools such as Excel and field data collection software on laptops and tablets.
  • Ability to use GPS and other electronic devices for accurate field data collection and mapping.
  • Capability to operate field measurement tools such as height sticks and range finders safely and accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when recording equipment information and preparing reports.
  • Ability to read, learn, and apply the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) and electric utility construction standards.
  • Comfort working outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliability in a clock-in/clock-out work environment with consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • High School Diploma preferred or equivalent education.
  • Valid driving capability that meets company vehicle driving requirements, with a preference for candidates 21 or older (candidates 20 or older may be acceptable).
  • Physical ability to walk routes, carry light equipment, and perform visual inspections in the field.
  • Strong communication skills to document findings clearly and interact effectively with team members.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Background in physically demanding roles such as manual labor, construction, utility locating, landscaping, manufacturing, or warehouse/cold storage environments.
  • Experience with utility locating, power distribution, overhead lines, and distribution design concepts.
  • Familiarity with pole analysis, easements, and power distribution infrastructure.
  • Exposure to low voltage distribution (LVD) systems and related field work.
  • Experience working in environments that require adherence to safety standards and procedures.
  • Associate-level technology degrees are welcome when combined with relevant physical work experience and field exposure.
  • Interest in developing new technical skills and certifications related to electrical distribution and field services.
  • Ability to adapt to changing project needs and to work efficiently under time and productivity targets.
  • Motivation to build a long-term career in field-based utility and infrastructure services within a collaborative, entrepreneurial culture.

Work Environment

The role is based out of a Dayton-area office, where you report each day to receive assignments and coordinate field activities. After checking in, you typically travel with a designated driver or team member to field locations, with most work occurring within approximately one hour of the office. The schedule is structured around four 10-hour shifts per week, with flexibility to work five 10-hour shifts as needed, offering extended weekends or additional earning potential depending on project demands. The work is primarily outdoors and focused on visual inspections and data collection, providing a balance between field activity and reduced physical strain compared to heavy manual labor. You regularly use laptops, tablets, GPS units, and measurement tools such as height sticks and range finders to perform your duties. The environment emphasizes safety, teamwork, and adherence to established standards, with opportunities to develop new skills and advance through training and certifications. The culture values collaborative problem-solving, entrepreneurial thinking, and recognition of strong performance, allowing you to contribute to meaningful infrastructure projects that serve local communities.
