This position description identifies the major responsibilities of this job. It does not include all aspects of the position such as the potential additional duties assigned by supervisors and the requirement for flexibility in helping others for the company's overall benefit.
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a field service technician, you are part of the Lifecycle Services Department, reporting to the Service Department Manager. You are responsible for installing, servicing, maintaining, and upgrading Pattyn packaging equipment across North America. Together with Support Technicians, you are responsible for ensuring world class service to customers focusing on Case Erecting, Bag Inserting, Bulk Filling, Case Closing, and Palletizing equipment.
You are expected to have the ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and mechanical problems, implement minor program modifications and perform preventive maintenance. You are also responsible for representing the Pattyn name with integrity in the face of the customer. Technical aptitude needs to be paired with strong administrative skills, diligent work habits, and a strong curiosity. The right candidate is expected to have extensive electrical and mechanical troubleshooting abilities with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment, emphasizing a customer first mentality.
Field Service Technicians perform work almost exclusively at the customer's site with an expectation of 90% travel. The position is hourly with eligibility for overtime. Standard schedule is 5 days/week - 10 hours/day. Travel to the customer's location is usually on Monday morning and you are on-site at the customer Monday afternoon to touch base and review the scope of work with the customer. You will work on site on the specified scope of work Tuesday to midday Friday. Return home travel is on Friday afternoon. Occasionally technicians are required to remain at the customer over the weekend. This occurs 15% - 25% of weekends.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Equipment installation, commissioning, and start-up at customers' locations.
  • Service and repairs of equipment at customers' locations.
  • Promote parts sales and equipment upgrades.
  • Training customers in operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Electrical/mechanical diagnosis of complex issues related to Pattyn equipment
    implementation, installation, and evaluation of product improvements.
  • Maintain and submit visit and expense reports.
  • Booking your travel arrangements according to customer specific job requirements
  • Create accurate and timely service reports and expense reports

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 - 4 years of experience in industrial automation is preferred, but additional training at the Pattyn factory in Belgium and/or France is required regardless of experience.
  • Education: Associate or bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, automation systems, or related discipline is desired.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Excellent working knowledge in the Microsoft Suite of applications - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
    • ABB and Fanuc robotics programming experience strongly preferred.
    • Strong skill set related to programmable logic controllers (PLC / IPC) for diagnosis of software issues. You will be expected to make basic program modifications, including adding alarms, parameters, timers, and setting up PLC to PLC data transmission in Beckhoff Twincat 2 and Twincat 3.
    • Able to read and interpret electrical schematics and use them as a resource to troubleshoot equipment problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Able to stand, walk, bend, twist, and reach with arms and hands. Good visual acuity to see computer screens and read fine print on a variety of reports.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
90% at customers, which mainly include food production facilities, some of which produce allergens such as tree nuts and shellfish. 10% office and warehouse environment.
