What is an entry software engineer?

Entry software engineers are professionals who have recently started their careers in software development, typically with less than two years of experience. They are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the supervision of more experienced engineers. Entry software engineers often work on smaller tasks, bug fixes, and learn industry best practices while contributing to larger projects. Their role provides a foundation for building advanced technical skills and growing into senior engineering positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Software Engineer, you need a solid grasp of programming fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with languages such as Java, Python, or C++, and experience with tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic software development methodologies are commonly required. Strong communication, teamwork, and a willingness to learn help you collaborate effectively and adapt to evolving technical challenges. These skills ensure you can contribute to projects, work well within a team, and grow quickly in the fast-paced software industry.

What are some common challenges faced by entry software engineers when joining their first development team?

Entry software engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to large codebases, understanding team workflows, and getting comfortable with collaborative development tools like version control systems. Navigating code reviews and learning to communicate technical ideas clearly can also be new experiences. However, most teams provide onboarding resources, mentorship, and regular feedback to help new engineers integrate smoothly and grow their skills.

What is the difference between Entry Software Engineer vs Junior Software Developer?

Both roles are entry-level positions in software development, often requiring similar educational backgrounds and internships. The term "Entry Software Engineer" emphasizes a broader engineering role with potential involvement in design and architecture, while "Junior Software Developer" typically focuses on coding and implementation tasks. Employers may use these titles interchangeably, but understanding the nuances helps candidates target the right opportunities.

How to get a job as an entry software engineer with no experience?

Entry software engineer roles often require foundational programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or C++, which can be gained through online courses, coding bootcamps, or self-study. Building a portfolio with personal projects, contributing to open-source, and obtaining relevant certifications can help demonstrate skills to employers despite limited professional experience.

Is 25 too late to become an entry software engineer?

Entry software engineering roles typically target recent graduates or those with limited professional experience, but age is not a strict barrier. Many employers value skills, coding ability, and relevant projects over age, and individuals can start learning programming languages and building portfolios at any age to qualify for such positions.

Job description

About the Role

Loop is looking for a full‑stack Software Engineer to contribute directly to the design, development, and maintenance of our core products. You’ll build scalable solutions, uphold technical excellence, and be a reliable partner to the engineers around you.

AI at Loop Engineering

Engineering at Loop is AI‑first. Every engineer is provisioned with Claude Code and Cursor, and we expect AI agents to be your default starting point before you open a file. You are not primarily a writer of code; you are the judgment layer. You determine what should be built, validate that what was built is correct, and own the outcome in production. AI handles a growing share of implementation, but you own everything that surrounds it.

Our Blended Work Environment

We work from our HQ in Columbus, OH, and are distributed throughout the United States, select Canadian provinces, United Kingdom, and Australia. For this position we are open to Columbus, OH; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Austin, TX; Los Angeles, CA; or fully remote.

Our Tech Stack

PHP/Laravel, Vue.js, MySQL, DynamoDB, Kubernetes, AWS, Serverless. Our hiring process is tech‑stack agnostic.

What You’ll Do
  • Design, build, and maintain web applications, APIs, backend services, and lambdas for the Loop product line. Match the level of rigor to the stakes. Craftsmanship means fit for purpose.
  • Start with the agent, not the editor. Invest time in planning and intent articulation; the quality of your prompt is the quality of your output.
  • Review AI‑generated code with the same rigor you’d apply to any code. Plausible is not the same as correct.
  • Include meaningful test coverage in every PR and contribute to a healthy CI/CD process.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and designers. Own the outcome in ambiguity.
  • Exhibit ownership: done means stable in merchant hands, not just merged. Flag risks early, make reversible decisions fast, and iterate.
  • Make the system around you more effective, not just your own output. Contribute beyond your immediate scope is part of the job at every level.
Your Experience
  • 2‑4+ years building web applications, backend services, or APIs.
  • Use AI agents as your default starting point and can describe your actual workflow: plan a task, prompt an agent, evaluate the output, and decide where to spend your review time.
  • Have caught AI‑generated code that looked right but wasn’t. Treat it the same as code from any other source.
  • Have a point of view on where AI helps and where it gets engineers into trouble, and can speak to both from real experience.
  • Experience with PHP/Laravel, AWS Serverless, or Vue.js is a strong plus, but not required.
  • Care about well‑tested, reliable software and have worked in agile, CI/CD environments.
  • Operate with intensity and hold a high bar for yourself and others. Give direct feedback, ask for help early, and respond to setbacks with ownership.
  • Can share examples of learning from mistakes, asking for help, and growing through feedback.
Compensation

$125,000 – $165,000 a year (base salary). This range may change. The actual annual salary will be based on experience, location, and market demand.

Benefits

Medical, dental, and vision insurance; flexible PTO; company holidays; sick & safe leave; parental leave; 401(k); monthly wellness benefit; home workstation benefit; phone/internet benefit; equity.
