What is an entry software developer?

Entry software developers are professionals who are new to the software development field, typically with less than two years of experience. They are responsible for writing, testing, and maintaining code under the supervision of more experienced developers. Entry-level developers often work on smaller tasks or projects while learning best practices, tools, and methodologies used in software engineering. This role is ideal for recent graduates or individuals transitioning into tech, as it provides foundational experience and growth opportunities within a development team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry software developer?

To thrive as an Entry Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), algorithms, and data structures, usually backed by a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with development tools like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic knowledge of databases or cloud platforms is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, willingness to learn, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills enable new developers to contribute efficiently to projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate successfully within development teams.

What types of projects and technologies are entry software developers typically assigned to when starting out?

As an entry software developer, you can expect to work on foundational tasks such as bug fixes, feature enhancements, or simple modules within larger applications. You will often be introduced to the company's tech stack, which may include popular programming languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, and tools for version control and collaboration, such as Git and Jira. These initial assignments are designed to help you become familiar with the codebase and development workflow while supporting more experienced team members. Collaboration with mentors and participation in code reviews are common, providing learning opportunities and feedback to help you grow in your role.

Can I be an entry software developer with no experience?

Entry software developer roles often require some foundational knowledge of programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, but many employers are willing to consider candidates with little to no professional experience if they demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, relevant coursework, or personal projects. Gaining certifications, building a portfolio, and learning tools like Git can improve your chances of securing an entry-level position without prior work experience.

What do entry-level software developers make?

Entry-level software developers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on location, industry, and company size. Starting salaries often increase with skills in programming languages, such as Java, Python, or C++, and familiarity with development tools and environments.

Job description

The Role: Full Stack Developer - Product Engineering

Level: Intermediate to Senior, based on experience. We are currently looking to fill multiple positions within this role.

Location: Calgary, AB (in-office role)

About Showpass

At Showpass, we're reigniting the joy of live experiences.

We're Canada's fastest-growing event ticketing and live experience platform, powering everything from concerts and festivals to comedy shows, attractions, nightlife, and community events.

But we're not just a ticketing company.

We help event organizers grow their businesses, bring new creators into the live events space, and build technology that has to perform in real-world, high-pressure environments where failure is not an option. When thousands of people are trying to buy tickets, check in at the gate, or run an event on-site, the software needs to just work.

We're proud to be recognized as:

  • Canada's Most Admired Corporate Cultures (2024 & 2025)
  • CanadianSME Fastest Growing Company (2024)
  • Deloitte Technology Fast 50 (#20, 2024)

The Role

We're looking for a Full Stack Developer who wants to build meaningful products, not just complete tickets.

This role is for someone who can take a problem from idea to production, make smart technical decisions, and cares deeply about whether the thing they built actually works for customers. You'll work across the stack, contributing to customer-facing product experiences, APIs, backend systems, data models, and the infrastructure that supports them. Our environment includes technologies such as React, TypeScript, and Next.js on the frontend, alongside Django-powered backend services and the broader platform infrastructure that supports our products at scale.

We're looking for someone with strong technical fundamentals, good judgement, and a bias for action. You should be comfortable asking questions, challenging assumptions, and proposing better ways to solve problems.

This is a great role for either a strong intermediate developer ready to grow into senior-level impact, or a senior developer who wants ownership, speed, and product influence.

What You'll Do:

  • Build and ship full-stack features from idea to production
  • Build polished, reliable product experiences across the stack using React, TypeScript, Next.js, and Django
  • Design, build, and improve APIs and backend workflows
  • Work with PostgreSQL and help evolve our data models
  • Build tools that help event organizers manage, grow, and improve their events
  • Improve the attendee experience from discovery to checkout to event entry
  • Debug production issues and strengthen the reliability of our systems
  • Work closely with product, design, support, and engineering leadership
  • Use modern development tools, including AI-assisted workflows, to improve speed and quality
  • Challenge assumptions, identify better solutions, and take ownership of outcomes

What Makes Someone Successful Here:

  • Care about the customer impact of what you're building
  • Like owning problems, not just completing assigned tickets
  • Can work through ambiguity and make thoughtful technical decisions
  • Move quickly while still caring about quality
  • Have strong fullstack product instincts
  • Enjoys working with and supporting their team members in-office
  • Are comfortable working across the stack
  • Know when to ask for help and when to make a decision
  • Use tools thoughtfully, but do not rely on them as a substitute for understanding
  • Want to keep getting better as an engineer

What You Bring:

  • 4+ years of software development experience
  • experience building modern frontend applications using React, Vue, or a similar framework
  • Backend development experience, ideally with Python/Django or similar frameworks
  • Experience designing, consuming, and debugging APIs
  • Experience with PostgreSQL or another relational database
  • Strong problem-solving skills and sound engineering judgement
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment
  • A self-starter mindset and a strong sense of ownership
  • Interest in using modern tools and workflows to become more effective

Nice to Have:

  • Strong React + TypeScript experience
  • Experience with high-traffic, transactional, or event-driven systems
  • Background jobs, queues, Celery, Redis, or similar tools
  • Cloud experience, especially GCP
  • Observability tools such as Sentry, Datadog, or similar
  • Experience building or integrating AI-powered product features
  • Experience in ticketing, payments, marketplaces, live events, or commerce

What This Role Is Like

Showpass is a fast-moving product and engineering environment. You'll have room to make decisions, ship meaningful work, and see the impact of what you build. This role is a strong fit for someone who wants ownership and growth. It may not be the right fit if you prefer fully defined requirements, narrow implementation work, or staying in one layer of the stack. We're looking for someone who can think beyond the ticket, understand the customer problem, and help us build better solutions.

Why Join Showpass

Our work is grounded in our core values (GUAC). Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • Grow relentlessly - we move fast, learn, and improve
  • Understand the value of time - we prioritize speed and momentum
  • Act like an owner - you build it and see it show up at real events
  • Curiosity - we experiment, including with AI

Plus:

  • Competitive compensation + performance bonus
  • Employee Stock Option Plan (we don't just act like owners, we are owners)
  • Comprehensive Benefits Plan + HSA/LSA
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Daily breakfast & lunch from our in-house chef
  • Learning & Development allowance + Curiosity Talks
  • Team bonding events
  • Insider Pass event credits
  • Dog-friendly office

Showpass is committed to employment equity, welcomes diversity in the workplace, and encourages applications from all qualified individuals. We thank all interested applicants; however, only qualified applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.
