Job description

Senior Workers’ Compensation Defense Paralegal / Junior Hearing Representative

A growing defense-side practice is seeking a seasoned and highly organized workers’ compensation paralegal with strong writing abilities and experience supporting hearing-related work. This role involves drafting reports, summarizing depositions, handling filings, preparing settlement and pre-trial documents, and maintaining accurate case data. Familiarity with Merus or similar case management platforms is highly preferred.

This is a fully remote position suited for someone who is responsive, detail-oriented, and capable of managing responsibilities independently. The right candidate will take initiative, maintain organization across multiple files, and ensure cases continue progressing without the need for constant oversight.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft comprehensive and well-written status reports for clients
  • Prepare detailed deposition summaries
  • Assist with, and in some cases independently handle, routine hearings
  • Support preparation of pre-trial conference statements
  • Draft and finalize settlement documents, including Compromise & Release and Stipulations
  • Manage electronic filings and maintain compliance with WCAB procedures
  • Maintain accurate and organized case files within a case management system
  • Input, audit, and update case data with precision
  • Track deadlines, manage calendars, and ensure timely follow-up
  • Communicate with clients regarding case updates and developments
  • Support attorneys by keeping workflows organized and on schedule
  • Review files proactively and identify outstanding issues or next steps

Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in workers’ compensation defense is required
  • Strong knowledge of California workers’ compensation processes
  • Familiarity with EAMS, WCAB procedures, and defense-side case handling
  • Experience with legal case management and data systems
  • Exposure to Merus or similar platforms is strongly preferred
  • Ability to produce clear written work, including reports and summaries
  • Experience assisting with hearings and basic appearances preferred
  • Background preparing pre-trial and settlement documents is a plus
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Highly organized, self-directed, and responsive in a remote setting
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to meet a minimum billable requirement of 6 hours per day
  • Interest in long-term growth within the legal field is welcomed; however, prior defense experience is required

Candidate Profile:

This position is best suited for someone who is proactive, dependable, and able to manage cases with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate anticipates needs, follows through consistently, and contributes to moving matters forward efficiently. Candidates operating at, or close to, a hearing representative level will be especially well-aligned for this role.
