Job description

PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION:

Responsible for the administration, maintenance, security, and reliability of the City’s server, storage, virtualization, identity management, and core technology infrastructure while providing advanced technical support and ensuring the availability of critical business systems.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:
  • Administer and maintain Windows Server operating systems and related infrastructure.
  • Manage Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and user authentication services.
  • Administer Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and Entra ID (Azure Active Directory)
  • Monitor server health, storage utilization, system performance, and infrastructure availability.
  • Perform routine server maintenance, updates, firmware upgrades, and security patching.
  • Develop, maintain, and regularly test backup and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Monitor and respond to cybersecurity threats, system alerts, and security incidents.
  • Implement and maintain endpoint security, antivirus, and vulnerability management solutions.
  • Administer virtualization infrastructure including VMware and virtual machine lifecycle management.
  • Maintain storage systems, SAN/NAS devices, and backup appliances.
  • Manage server certificates, SSL certificates, and encryption technologies.
  • Maintain system documentation, network diagrams, configuration standards, and disaster recovery documentation.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new technologies and infrastructure improvements.
  • Participate in IT project planning, implementation, and technology deployments.
  • Perform root cause analysis for recurring infrastructure and systems issues.
  • Maintain software licensing and server inventory records.
  • Coordinate with software and hardware vendors for technical support and warranty issues.
  • Participate in after-hours maintenance windows and emergency response for critical systems.
  • Provide Tier II technical support and serve as an escalation point for Desktop Support staff.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for server and infrastructure administration.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Systems Administrator reports directly to the IT Director.

The Systems Administrator does not have any direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Training and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent and at least an Associate degree in a related field with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience with server and PC troubleshooting in a networked environment; or an equivalent amount of education and experience.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Basic knowledge of network hardware including switches, routers, cabling, firewalls and other such equipment; knowledge of and experience with network protocols; experience with Microsoft PC operating systems that include Windows 10 and Windows 11; experience with server administration on Windows Server 2008, 2012 or later Standard and Enterprise; experience with Microsoft Exchange server administration; experience maintaining Microsoft Office applications; experience with configuring web filters (Barracuda preferred); experience with virtual servers in VMWare environment. Knowledge and experience with Active Directory and domain controllers is a must. Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices. Experience with VoIP telephone systems. Experience with cloud services (Microsoft 365 and Azure preferred). Experience administering virtualization platforms. Experience with PowerShell or other scripting languages for automation. Knowledge of backup and disaster recovery methodologies. Candidate must be very customer service oriented and be able to carry out daily tasks with minimal supervision. Must be a self-starter. Candidate must have strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, the ability to prioritize infrastructure issues based on business impact, ability to document technical procedures and maintain accurate record systems and work independently while managing multiple priorities. Strong project management and organizational skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential. Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class D driver’s license is required.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work in this classification is primarily indoors in an office environment. Will travel to other City locations as required. Requires some night and weekend work with ability to work on-call.

Notice:

This classification is a “safety sensitive” position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. As a “safety sensitive” classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
