Job description

Position Summary

The City of Pharr is seeking a part-time Reference Assistant (PT) to support accurate, timely information service for library patrons. This entry-level, onsite role helps ensure patrons can locate resources and use technology confidently while maintaining orderly reference operations.
Key responsibilities include providing reference assistance using appropriate print and digital sources; supporting reference desk workflow; processing interlibrary loan (ILL) requests as needed; assisting patrons with internet searching and common computer programs; and completing routine data entry and daily record tracking in the reference system.
Required knowledge and skills:
- Strong attention, listening, and clear reasoning for reference interactions
- Customer service mindset with an active-help approach
- Familiarity with administrative/clerical procedures (files, records, forms, transcription)
- Ability to read and interpret work-related written materials
- Comfort teaching patrons basic tasks and explaining steps clearly
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and related software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect)
If you’re ready to serve the community through dependable library support, apply today.

A Typical Shift

Your shift begins by checking the reference area for readiness—systems available, materials in place, and yesterday’s counts verified. As patrons arrive, you balance quick directional questions with longer research help, moving between print sources and online tools to guide people to reliable answers. Throughout the day, you document key activity in the reference system, keep the desk organized, and coordinate occasional ILL follow-ups. When patrons need technology help, you walk them through searches and basic software steps at a steady, respectful pace. Because this role is 19 hours per week with evening/weekend availability, your schedule may align with peak public hours when clear communication and calm prioritization matter most.
