Entry Level Vulnerability Management information

What is entry level vulnerability management?

Entry level vulnerability management refers to the process of identifying, assessing, and helping to remediate security vulnerabilities in computer systems and networks. People in these roles typically assist with vulnerability scanning, analyzing scan results, and working with teams to prioritize and fix security issues. Entry-level professionals often use automated tools and follow established procedures while learning to interpret findings and understand security risks. This role is a foundational position in cybersecurity and helps organizations reduce their risk of cyberattacks.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry level vulnerability management professionals, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level professionals in vulnerability management often face challenges such as prioritizing vulnerabilities from large scan reports, communicating technical risks to non-technical stakeholders, and keeping up with evolving security threats. To overcome these challenges, it’s important to develop strong analytical skills to assess risk, seek mentorship from experienced team members, and stay updated with industry news and best practices. Regular collaboration with IT, development, and security teams also helps in understanding business context and improving remediation processes.

Is entry level vulnerability management a good career?

Entry level vulnerability management roles involve identifying and addressing security weaknesses in computer systems, often requiring knowledge of security tools and basic networking. These positions offer opportunities for growth in cybersecurity and can lead to advanced roles with additional certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CISSP. The field is in demand due to increasing cyber threats and organizations' need for security professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level vulnerability management professional?

To thrive as an Entry Level Vulnerability Management professional, you need a foundational understanding of cybersecurity principles, familiarity with operating systems, and often a relevant degree or certification such as CompTIA Security+. Experience with vulnerability scanning tools like Nessus, Qualys, or Rapid7, as well as basic knowledge of ticketing systems, is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for identifying and reporting security risks. These skills and qualities are essential for maintaining an organization’s security posture and ensuring timely remediation of vulnerabilities.

The Junior Cyber Security Analyst supports information security operations across GMR and its subsidiaries by monitoring security alerts, reviewing event activity, assisting with incident triage, and helping protect the organization's technology environment. This role works closely with SOC team members to investigate potential threats, document findings, route tickets, escalate issues when appropriate, and support incident response activities through resolution. The analyst also assists with reporting, standard operating procedures, risk and compliance activities, and security awareness efforts. This position serves as the entry point into the Security Operations Center (SOC) career path and provides opportunities for professional development through hands-on experience, mentorship, training, and participation in cyber defense activities. The role is designed to help build foundational security operations skills and support progression into higher-level analyst positions over time. This position is ideal for a developing security professional who is analytical, eager to learn, collaborative, and committed to strengthening GMR's security program while supporting the organization's mission of providing care at a moment's notice.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES

  • Monitor security alerts, dashboards, queues, and event logs under the guidance of senior SOC team members.
  • Perform initial triage of potential cyber security events by gathering available information, documenting observations, validating available evidence, and escalating findings to senior analysts for further investigation and response.
  • Create, update, route, and close security tickets in accordance with documented procedures and service expectations.
  • Participate in after-hours on-call rotation to provide security support across the GMR technology environment as needed.
  • Assist senior analysts with investigation of phishing emails, suspicious logins, endpoint alerts, malware detections, and other common security events while developing investigative and analytical skills.
  • Support incident response activities by collecting information, documenting actions taken, communicating status updates, and following established escalation paths.
  • Follow standard operating procedures, playbooks, and checklists to ensure consistent handling of alerts and incidents.
  • Document cyber security incidents, investigation notes, actions taken, and outcomes clearly and accurately.
  • Assist with preparation of routine SOC reports, metrics, and summaries for operational awareness.
  • Help maintain and improve SOC documentation, knowledge articles, response procedures, and process notes.
  • Support basic risk, audit, and compliance activities by providing requested evidence, documentation, and ticket details.
  • Promote security awareness by sharing approved guidance, reinforcing safe practices, and assisting with employee security questions as directed.
  • Identify potential gaps, unusual activity, or recurring issues and report them to senior analysts or leadership for review.
  • Continue building knowledge of cyber security concepts, common attacker tactics, threat trends, internal tools, SOC operating procedures, and investigative techniques that support progression within the SOC analyst career path.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent coursework, technical training, certification, internship experience, military cyber operations experience, help desk experience, or hands-on IT/security experience may be considered.
  • Entry-level certifications such as Security+, Network+, ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC), CySA+, Microsoft security certifications, or similar cybersecurity certifications are preferred but not required.
  • Foundational understanding of cybersecurity concepts, including phishing, malware, access control, vulnerability management, network security, and incident response.
  • Basic familiarity with IT ticketing systems, security alerts, endpoint protection tools, email security tools, SIEM concepts, or other monitoring platforms preferred.
  • Ability to follow documented procedures, accurately document findings, escalate issues appropriately, and ask questions when additional guidance is needed.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to summarize technical issues clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while collaborating effectively with SOC team members, IT operations, system administrators, network engineers, and security/compliance partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic SOC environment with guidance from senior analysts or leadership.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn, accept coaching, and develop technical and professional skills within a structured cybersecurity career path.
  • Prior IT support, help desk, internship, lab, classroom, military, or equivalent practical technology experience preferred.
