Job description

Job Summary

The Accountant II performs professional-level accounting work involving the review, analysis, and maintenance of financial records throughout the annual accounting cycle. This role is responsible for interpreting financial regulations, preparing complex financial reports, conducting audits and cost analyses, and supporting accurate fiscal reporting. The position may also provide guidance to technical and clerical staff and participate in the improvement of accounting systems and internal controls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and perform a wide range of accounting activities, including classification of revenues and expenditures, journal entries, trial balances, and period-end adjustments

  • Interpret and apply accounting laws, regulations, and standards; recommend implementation steps

  • Conduct cost surveys, revenue analyses, and accounting system or procedural studies; prepare reports of findings

  • Compile, evaluate, and reconcile complex operating statements, project accounting, and reimbursement claims

  • Prepare balance sheets, revenue statements, fund balance statements, cost reports, and other specialized financial reports

  • Compile expenditure and revenue data and prepare periodic financial statements, including grant-related reporting

  • Perform routine audits of financial records for agencies, organizations, or contractors; prepare audit reports and recommendations

  • Coordinate internal and external audits and prepare supporting documentation

  • Analyze cost accounting systems and recommend improvements to enhance accuracy and reliability

  • Serve as a liaison with other departments or agencies on accounting matters

  • Participate in the installation and improvement of accounting systems and procedures

  • Supervise a small accounting or clerical staff, as needed

  • Support internal control and compliance activities, as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of 21 semester units or 32 quarter units of accounting coursework from an accredited college or university, including at least two advanced accounting courses (e.g., auditing, cost accounting, or governmental accounting)

  • One of the following experience options:

    • One year of entry-level accounting or auditing experience

    • Two years of technical or paraprofessional accounting experience involving preparation, processing, reconciliation, and maintenance of fiscal records

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to provide verification of required education and experience

  • Valid drivers license or the ability to use alternative transportation for job-related duties

Physical Requirements

  • Light physical effort, including occasional lifting up to 10 pounds, bending, stooping, squatting, and periods of walking or standing

This position is suited for detail-oriented accounting professionals with strong analytical skills and experience handling complex financial records and reporting.
