What is an entry level UX designer?

Entry level UX designers are professionals at the beginning of their careers in user experience (UX) design. They are responsible for helping to create intuitive and user-friendly digital products, such as websites and mobile apps, by focusing on the needs and behaviors of users. Their tasks often include conducting user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and collaborating with other team members to improve overall product usability. Entry level UX designers typically work under the guidance of more experienced designers and are expected to have some foundational knowledge of design tools and principles.

What does an entry level UX designer do?

An entry-level UX designer helps design products that provide a positive customer or user experience. Their responsibilities often include working with elements of design, function, branding, and usability. Other duties of an entry-level UX designer include modifying information architecture to improve user interface (UI), creating wireframes, digital prototyping, and product testing. Someone in this position, also referred to as a junior designer, works under the supervision of an experienced designer to gain skills and professional experience. The qualifications you need to become an entry-level UX designer vary, but often include training or a postsecondary degree in computer science or a relevant field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level UX designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level UX Designer, foundational skills in user research, wireframing, prototyping, and an understanding of user-centered design principles—often supported by a degree or certification in design or a related field—are essential. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help designers effectively translate user needs into intuitive interfaces and work seamlessly with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial for creating engaging, accessible digital experiences that meet both user and business goals.

What types of projects do entry level UX designers typically work on, and how much creative input can they expect to have?

Entry level UX designers often start by working on smaller features within larger projects, such as refining user flows, creating wireframes, or conducting usability tests under the guidance of senior team members. While initial creative input may be somewhat limited, many organizations encourage junior designers to share ideas during team meetings and design critiques. As you demonstrate your skills and initiative, you'll likely gain more ownership over specific components or even lead small projects. Collaboration with UI designers, developers, and product managers is a regular part of the role, providing valuable exposure to different aspects of the design process.

Is it hard to get an entry level UX designer job?

Securing an entry-level UX designer position can be competitive, but candidates with a strong portfolio, basic knowledge of design tools like Figma or Adobe XD, and understanding of user-centered design principles often find opportunities more accessible. Building relevant skills through courses, internships, or freelance projects can improve chances of landing an entry-level role.

Join the Slingers! Slingshot is seeking an emerging professional Interior Designer I (Interior Design Associate or Interior Designer 1) to join our passionate, purpose-driven studio in Des Moines. We're a small but mighty team of interior designers and architects dedicated to crafting meaningful, human-centered commercial spaces that elevate everyday life and strengthen Midwestern communities. Our work spans architecture, interiors, and urbanism — always with a focus on clarity, precision, and real impact.

As a teaching studio, we value team members who take ownership of their work, grow alongside talented colleagues, and contribute to collaborative excellence. In this role, you'll provide interior design assistance on projects under the direction of mid-to senior-level designers and architects, helping bring concepts to life through thoughtful development, documentation, and team support — with opportunities to build your skills and impact from concept through construction documentation.

What You'll Do

  • Work under the direction of mid-to senior-level interior designers and architects by providing design assistance with interior development.

  • Learn the SSA design process and project software, including ArchiCAD and SketchUp.
  • Assist the design team with maintaining the BIM library.
  • Support business development activities with finish boards, presentations, pulling together social media content, meeting note preparation, and more.
  • Assist in ordering samples for projects.
  • Attend client meetings and design critiques.
  • Maintain the interior design library and meet with manufacturer’s representatives to keep knowledge current.

Who We're Looking For: The ideal "Slinger" holds a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Interior Design (minimum four-year degree) and is on the path to licensure with up to three years of industry experience. You thrive when you:

  • Are a self-starter who shares our drive for creating meaningful work in a collaborative environment and desires to be part of an enthusiastic and passionate team.
  • Excel in a fast-paced, small-team setting committed to exceeding expectations daily.
  • Demonstrate a strong design instinct, generous work approach, and clarity in communication.
  • Possess working knowledge of the application of color, materials, and aesthetic form.
  • Have exposure to design specifications and industry standards, including FF&E.
  • Are familiar with space planning methodology.
  • Bring basic sketching and rendering skills.
  • Have working knowledge of construction documentation and procedures.
  • Possess intermediate MS Office Suite skills and experience in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills.

What We Offer
