Job description

GFT is seeking a Transmission Line Designer to join our Power Business Group.  

If you are in the Charlotte, NC, Roanoke, VA, Marlton, NJ, Pittsburgh, PA, St. Louis, MO, Chicago, IL or Phoenix, AZ area, it would be hybrid position.  
However, it could be fully remote for other areas and for the right person.

What youโ€™ll be challenged to do:

Under general supervision, performs transmission line engineering project designs for a wide variety of project types including utility, industrial, renewable, and developer clients. Performs assignments of limited scope which require the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related design engineering tasks.  Assignments may involve some unusual or difficult problems requiring job knowledge and abilities beyond entry level.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Model, analysis, and design transmission line segments using PLS-CADD software.
  • Performs structural analysis of transmission line structures.
  • Performs structural and electrical calculations in support of broader engineering activities involving the design of equipment, components, structures, or systems.
  • Conducts feasibility studies, routing studies, and EMF calculations to support project planning.
  • Prepares studies, reports and comprehensive construction packages, including structure details, material lists, staking tables, plan and profiles, and stringing charts.
  • Gathers and records information for the preparation of technical specifications.
  • Evaluates vendor submissions to assure compliance with specifications.
  • Prepares first draft of technical reports or sections of larger reports.
  • Reviews design drawings within defined limits.
  • Performs investigations & measurements and collects field data.
  • Performs 3-D modeling of transmission lines and structures.
  • Coordinates design and reviews specification with other groups within GFT to complete projects

What you will bring to our firm: 
  • BS in Engineering. Civil Engineer or Mechanical Engineering preferred. Other engineering fields (Electrical, Industrial, etc. considered)
  • 1 to 3 years of applicable experience
  • Familiar with AutoCAD 
  • Proficient knowledge of Design Software (PLS, FAD tools)
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • In-depth knowledge of NESC, IEEE, and other applicable codes and standards related to transmission line design.
  • Experience in electrical utility or utility consulting is strongly preferred.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.

Compensation:
The salary range for this role is $80,000 - $100,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
