Overview

Cal Poly Pomona invites applications for a tenure‑track faculty position in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate‑level urban design studios and a graduate‑level urban design course, and may also teach a community planning studio. The role combines teaching, research, and service to the department, college, and university, and supports the department’s commitment to diversifying the urban planning profession.

Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate‑level urban design studios and a graduate‑level urban design course, and potentially a community planning studio.
  • Promote student learning in a studio environment and mentor students in visualization, representation, and design thinking.
  • Engage in scholarship, research, and service to the profession, community, department, college, and university.
  • Contribute to instruction, research, and curriculum development for the accredited undergraduate and master’s programs.
  • Support the department’s commitment to diversity by engaging in inclusive teaching, scholarship, and service.
Core Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in urban design, architecture, landscape architecture, or a closely related design discipline; demonstrated ability to apply design within planning or urban contexts.
  • Portfolio of design work, built projects, or research‑driven design practice that engages with contemporary planning challenges such as climate‑responsive design, sustainable urbanism, health and well‑being, community engagement, or smart city initiatives.
  • Commitment to teaching excellence, particularly studio‑based or project‑based learning, and contribution to curricular development.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in urban planning or a related field (ABD will be considered if the degree is conferred by the start date).
  • Experience teaching urban design studios and potential to teach a range of courses in the curriculum.
  • Evidence of scholarly, creative, or professional work in urban design, including publications, built work, competitions, or funded research.
  • Experience mentoring and advising students, especially first‑generation and students from historically underrepresented groups.
Application Process

  • Cover letter describing interest, experience, and how qualifications align with the position.
  • Teaching philosophy statement (2‑page max) addressing Cal Poly Pomona’s commitment to education excellence.
  • Research statement (2‑page max).
  • Portfolio of design work (up to 10 pages).
  • Contact information for 3–5 references.

Finalists will be required to provide official transcripts, letters of reference, and will present a teaching demonstration and creative work presentation.

Application deadline: October 31, 2026 (first consideration given to applications received by the end of Saturday, October 31, 2026).
