West 9 - Surgical-Medical Shorter Stay Unit

West 9 is a 24-bed acute care unit. This unit cares for both medical and surgical patient populations. All Acute Care burn patients requiring dressing changes, surgical interventions, and management are cared for here. Procedural Short Stay (PSS) and Observation patients are the other focus for this department. Typical diagnoses for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine patients are asthma, bronchiolitis, dehydration/viral gastroenteritis, skin & soft tissue infection/cellulitis, unintentional toxic ingestion, and croup. Nurses may also care for medical patients with varying diagnoses who are expected to have a shorter hospital stay. The PSS surgical specialties in this department are: General Surgery, Ortho, ENT, Urology, Plastics/Craniofacial, Ophthalmology, and Dental. Some common diagnoses are tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy, appendicitis, extremity fractures, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and umbilical or inguinal hernia.

Responsibilities include being a partner in the care management team, providing coordination and management of patient care to pediatric patients and families within a continuum of care and delegating patient activities as appropriate within a care management assignment. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing in order to meet the recommended entry level for a professional nurse (or equivalent academic and/or professional experience). A license to practice professional nursing in the State of Wisconsin.
