The Office of the Vice Provost for Research & Scholarship, Division of Veterinary Resources (DVR), has a great job opportunity for an Accountant (Entry Level/Recent Grad) to work at the University of Miami, in Miami, Florida.

Work Location: Medical Campus

CORE JOB SUMMARY

The Accountant oversees the assigned department's internal accounting and reporting functions and assists management with all fiscal functions, including budget formulation and monitoring of accounts, to ensure compliance with University policies and warrant availability of department funds at all times.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Prepares balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports.

  • Analyzes trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses.

  • Reports assigned department's finances to management and offers suggestions about resource utilization, tax strategies, and assumptions underlying budget forecasts.

  • Verifies the accuracy of journal vouchers and accounting classifications assigned to various records.

  • Examines and reconciles expenditure and revenue accounts.

  • Reviews and approves all reimbursements, check requisitions, and purchase orders.

  • Assists with fiscal year end process including entries for the necessary accruals.

  • Develops, analyzes, audits, reconciles, and monitors fiscal reports based upon current and historical financial revenues and expenditures.

  • Participates in planning long- or short-term business objectives.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Bachelor's degree in relevant field

Experience:

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience. Any appropriate combination of relevant education and/or work experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting procedures and principles.

  • Knowledge of budget control methods, policies, and procedures.

  • Ability to prepare financial and accounting records.

  • Ability to analyze, consolidate, and interpret accounting data.

  • Ability to compile, organize, interpret, and communicate accounting data and results concisely.

  • Ability to manage a budget and work within the constraints of that budget.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

  • Prepares requisitions for purchase orders via Workday.

  • Assists with supply inventory count at fiscal year-end.

  • Prepares journal entries for billing and inventory.

  • Completes the charges for DVR services in system (Ivis Research System).

  • Keeps track/updated departmental accounts to be charged for DVR services.

  • At month's end, prepares spreadsheet with all charges for the month to be used in billing.

  • Works with accounts payable to assist in the payment of DVR's bills.

  • Keeps track of DVR's expenses by vendor and commodity.

  • Assists the Veterinary Technicians with billing for special services.

  • Responsible to keep the DVR expense ledger updated by vendor, building and supply type.

  • Reviews all vendor invoices for accuracy of amounts received and pricing.

  • Prepares expense reports on vendor unpaid invoices by supply category.

  • Responsible for vendor invoice submission to the University's accounts payable office.

  • Reviews and reconciles census count by building and work with supervisors to address any discrepancies.

  • Prepares weekly report of research animal census by species, building and room number.

  • Serves as main contact for DVR's vendors to keep them in compliance with our Supply Chain office.

  • Prepares monthly accounting journals to bill/collect from investigators/departments payments for all DVR charges.

  • Works with accountants from medical school departments to upkeep accounts used for billing and answers any questions related to billing.

  • Assists in the reconciliation of animals received and enter them into the Huron system.

  • Actively participates in the training for the implementation of the Huron system.

  • Assists in working with Public Safety to review and grant access to investigators and their teams to DVR areas by reviewing protocols and ensuring that the appropriate research staff is granted access.
