During the externship, participants work under supervision in a healthcare setting, learning how to clean, sterilize, and prepare medical instruments and equipment. This on-the-job experience helps externs gain practical skills, fulfill certification requirements, and better understand the workflow of a sterile processing department. To thrive as an Entry Level Sterile Processing Technician Externship, you need foundational knowledge of infection control, sterilization procedures, and attention to detail, typically gained through a high school diploma or healthcare-related training. Familiarity with autoclaves, sterilization tracking systems, and basic medical instruments is essential, and certification through organizations like CBSPD or IAHCSMM is often preferred. Strong organizational skills, reliability, and effective communication help you excel in collaborating with surgical teams and maintaining safety standards. These skills are crucial to ensure patient safety by preventing infections and supporting efficient healthcare operations.
