Job description

Salary:

1) Purpose of Role

Operate civil construction equipment safely and efficiently to meet daily production plans. Perform basic inspections and maintenance, follow grade and staking directions, and document work as directed. Support the crew by adapting to site conditions while upholding GTI safety and quality standards.


2) Scope & Decision Rights

Safely operate assigned equipment, complete pre-use checks, support basic maintenance and fueling, and assist with material movement and grade support.


3) Essential Duties and Standards

Owns:

  • Operating assigned equipment (e.g., skid steer, dozer, roller) efficiently to complete daily tasks.
  • Performing preoperation inspections and routine care (cleaning, fueling, greasing); reporting leaks/damage immediately.
  • Maintaining safe work areas, spotting, and following hand signals and traffic control measures.
  • Reading and following basic grade stakes and laser directions; supporting grade control to hold elevation.
  • Maintaining basic Procore inputs or providing inputs to the foreman for daily logs/photos as directed.

Supports:

  • Foreman with task sequencing, safe access, and housekeeping to keep work moving.
  • Survey/layout team with staking protection and laser setups; adjusts work to grade directions.
  • Safety team with JSAs, trenching/shoring compliance, and traffic control setups.

Recommends/Prepares:

  • Equipment or tooling needs to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Field notes on obstacles (utilities, soft ground, water) that impact plan or grade.
  • Simple improvement ideas to reduce rework, shorten moves, or improve cleanup/compaction.

Escalates:

  • Equipment malfunctions, fluid leaks, or unsafe conditions.
  • Conflicts with grade stakes, plan marks, or unclear cut/fill instructions.
  • Traffic conflicts, overhead/underground hazards, or trench stability concerns.


4) Critical Competencies (must demonstrate)

Construction domain: Safe operation of assigned equipment; pretrip/posttrip inspections; preventive maintenance; trenching and traffic control awareness; earthworks and compaction; reading stakes and following laser directions; basic blueprint reading; Job Safety Analysis (JSA).

Information governance: Procore exposure for daily documentation; follow foreman instructions on photos/notes/quantities.

Productivity tools: Basic use of mobile field apps; radio/hand-signal communication; exposure to machine control/lasers.

Mindset: Communication; team orientation; adaptability; detail oriented; time management; problem solving.


5) Qualifications

  • 618 months civil/site experience operating entry-level equipment or successful completion of internal training.
  • Ability to safely operate assigned equipment under supervision and follow grade directions from stakes/lasers.
  • Basic equipment care (cleaning, fueling, greasing) and preoperation inspections.
  • Awareness of trenching/traffic control requirements; follows spotter/hand signals.
  • OSHA 10, First Aid, Flagger; NCCER HEO unit(s) a plus.
  • Valid drivers license.


6) Performance Measure Buckets

  • Safety: preop checks completed; incidents/nearmiss trends; traffic control and trenching practices followed.
  • Quality: grade/elevation held; compaction/cleanup quality; rework minimized.
  • Productivity: daily plan attainment; efficient cycles and travel paths; minimal idle time.
  • Documentation & teamwork: timely inputs to foreman; communication and responsiveness; care of equipment.
