Job description

Sports Reporter-Rapid City, SD
The Rapid City Journal, South Dakota's largest newspaper, is looking for a curious, dogged multimedia sports reporter to join our collaborative team in a competitive media market.
The sports beat in Rapid City includes coverage of high school sports fall through spring in Rapid City, a metro of about 150,000 people with three public schools and two private schools, along with other schools in the Black Hills area. The sports department also covers American Legion baseball during the summer and a handful of rodeos throughout the year, along with a minor league hockey team and two Division II colleges when time allows.
The position is part of an upbeat, award-winning newsroom and offers the opportunity to produce content for print and online on a wide variety of topics at a paper that values enterprise and watchdog reporting as well as narrative storytelling. The role includes producing photos and short videos for most stories.
The Journal newsroom, located in the heart of downtown Rapid City, is made up of great journalists who work hard and enjoy working together to tell the stories of the people, places and events happening in the Black Hills.
A bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field is preferred. New graduates are welcome to apply. Please include writing samples with your application.
Why Rapid City?
Rapid City is a scenic destination and hidden gem in the heart of America with a population just shy of 85,000. Western South Dakota includes the Black Hills National Forest, Crazy Horse Memorial, Mount Rushmore, Badlands National Park, Ellsworth Air Force Base, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, countless lakes, streams and outdoor recreation opportunities and the largest ski resort this side of the Rockies, not to mention and extensive trail system ripe for hiking, biking and side-by-sides. Rapid City is a bustling and growing city that serves as a regional hub for tourism and commerce.
The Black Hills also holds claim to historic Deadwood, a relic of the Wild West and home to some of the best gaming resorts in the region. The nearby wide-open spaces reflect that same Western flair as well. We have mild winters, gorgeous summers and great people.
