What does an entry level software engineer do?

An entry level software engineer is responsible for assisting in the design, development, testing, and maintenance of software applications. They typically work under the guidance of more experienced engineers and may write code, debug programs, and participate in code reviews. The role often involves learning company-specific tools and workflows, collaborating with team members, and continuously improving technical skills. Entry level software engineers are expected to adapt quickly, communicate effectively, and contribute to the team's overall goals.

What does an entry level software engineer do?

An Entry-Level Software Engineer, also called a Junior Engineer, works with a team of mid-level and senior engineers to develop, test, and maintain software applications and programs. The job duties of Junior Software Engineers typically include relatively simple routine tasks, such as debugging, testing, and code documentation. These tasks hone a Junior Engineer’s skills and familiarize them with the company’s code base. As Software Engineers gain more years of experience, they work on more complex development projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), computer science fundamentals, and often a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, development frameworks, and basic software development tools is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for building reliable software, adapting to evolving technologies, and contributing productively to team projects.

What types of projects do entry level software engineers typically work on, and how do they collaborate with other team members?

Entry level software engineers often start by working on smaller features, bug fixes, or assisting with testing and documentation within larger projects. They usually collaborate closely with senior engineers, product managers, and QA teams through code reviews, daily stand-ups, and pair programming sessions. This structure helps new engineers learn best practices, understand the codebase, and gradually take on more complex assignments. Effective communication and a willingness to learn are key to success in these collaborative environments.

Job description

Entry Level Civil Engineer
Department: Civil/Municipal
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Maumee, OH
Compensation: $27.00 - $30.00 / hour
Description
The Mannik & Smith Group (MSG) is a people-focused, award-winning, full-service consulting firm offering civil and geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, planning, landscape architecture, agriculture, surveying, and construction support. Our talented team of 650+ professionals delivers integrated planning, design, engineering, and construction solutions.
Build Things That Actually Matter (in Maumee, Ohio)
Somebody has to design the roads, drainage systems, and site layouts that make communities work - and we'd love for it to be you. MSG is seeking an Associate Civil Engineer to join our team in Maumee, Ohio, and get real, hands-on experience across land development, municipal, and infrastructure projects. No fetching coffee, no shadowing from a distance - you'll be involved in every stage of a project, from design and permitting through field support and construction documentation, with experienced engineers who are genuinely invested in helping you grow (and eventually get licensed).
And because we believe in backing that up with more than good intentions, this role comes with a guaranteed seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program for engineers looking to grow beyond the typical entry-level experience. Over six months, you'll take part in a hands-on curriculum covering professional development, business acumen, and project delivery - including case studies, simulations, and role-play exercises - covering topics like project economics, communication, and leadership fundamentals. It all wraps up with an in-person capstone event where you'll present your work and map out your goals for the year ahead. Your Future Starts With A Plan.
What You'll Do
  • Develop civil engineering designs and drawings - site layouts, grading, drainage, utilities, and roadways - using AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Help navigate the permitting maze, preparing applications for local, state, and federal agencies (yes, it's a lot of acronyms - you'll get the hang of it)
  • Prepare engineering calculations, feasibility studies, and technical reports that actually inform design decisions
  • Collaborate with project managers, surveyors, and other engineering disciplines to deliver coordinated solutions
  • Support stormwater management and drainage design (prior software experience a plus, not a requirement)
  • Get out of the office for site visits and field inspections to see your designs come to life - and troubleshoot when they don't quite go as planned

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • 0-3 years of civil engineering design experience (land development or municipal projects preferred, but we know everyone starts somewhere)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and related engineering software
  • Genuine interest in stormwater management and site development design
  • EIT certification preferred (or a willingness to get there)
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Comfort working in a team-oriented, multidisciplinary environment
  • Motivation to grow professionally and pursue licensure (PE a plus)

#LI-DD1
Why MSG?
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Health insurance with HSA option, Vision, Dental, Life
  • Flexible schedule
  • Paid time off
  • Referral program
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Catalytic Coaching - a personalized development plan built to grow your contributions today and your opportunities tomorrow. At MSG, bringing out the best in our people isn't a slogan - it's how we operate.

It is the policy of our company to follow equal employment opportunity procedures in compliance with federal, state and local criteria. We will provide all applicants for employment, and all employees, with equal opportunity without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, marital status, arrest record, disability, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, military or veteran status, and/or any other protected classes covered by any local, state and federal laws. The base salary range for this role is indicated in the posting. This range reflects the company's good faith estimate of the compensation for this position at the time of posting. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and geographic location.
