What Does an Entry Level Software Engineer Do?

An Entry-Level Software Engineer, also called a Junior Engineer, works with a team of mid-level and senior engineers to develop, test, and maintain software applications and programs. The job duties of Junior Software Engineers typically include relatively simple routine tasks, such as debugging, testing, and code documentation. These tasks hone a Junior Engineer’s skills and familiarize them with the company’s code base. As Software Engineers gain more years of experience, they work on more complex development projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), computer science fundamentals, and often a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, development frameworks, and basic software development tools is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective collaboration are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are crucial for building reliable software, adapting to evolving technologies, and contributing productively to team projects.

What types of projects do entry level software engineers typically work on, and how do they collaborate with other team members?

Entry level software engineers often start by working on smaller features, bug fixes, or assisting with testing and documentation within larger projects. They usually collaborate closely with senior engineers, product managers, and QA teams through code reviews, daily stand-ups, and pair programming sessions. This structure helps new engineers learn best practices, understand the codebase, and gradually take on more complex assignments. Effective communication and a willingness to learn are key to success in these collaborative environments.

Job Description

Property Matrix is a rapidly growing software company building the next generation of property management technology for both residential and commercial real estate. Our cloud-based platform is designed to be powerful, scalable, and reliable—supporting mid-size to enterprise clients across the U.S. as they modernize how they operate. We help property teams streamline the work that matters most: online rent payments, tenant portals, maintenance requests, leasing and applications, and efficient communication through email and text. With capabilities like document scanning, eSignature, and integrations with major listing sites such as Zillow and Trulia, Property Matrix reduces manual overhead and improves the experience for both staff and residents. We are also investing in AI-driven capabilities to automate repetitive workflows, surface insights, and make property operations more efficient.

In this role, you will contribute to real product development alongside a collaborative team, working on new features and improvements that directly impact customers. You will gain exposure across the full stack while developing strong engineering fundamentals through coding, testing, debugging, and documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and enhance front-end functionality using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (React experience is a plus).
  • Contribute to back-end development and database integrations (Ruby on Rails and SQL experience is a plus).
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve software issues across the application stack.
  • Collaborate with product, engineering, and QA to translate requirements into technical solutions.
  • Write, update, and maintain automated tests; improve test reliability and coverage (Selenium experience is a plus).
  • Document new functionality and maintain clear technical notes to support ongoing development.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to improvements in performance, maintainability, and code quality.

Requirements

  • Completed bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Math, or another related technical/science major.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to research and execute solutions using documentation and tutorials.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively on a team.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity, and a strong work ethic with motivation to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with React, Ruby on Rails, and SQL.
  • Exposure to Java and/or Python.
