Field Technician - Subsurface Utilities (SUE)
T. Baker Smith is seeking an entry-level Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Field Technician looking for an opportunity to work on a team in the field using the latest utility designating, locating and vacuum excavation equipment and technology.
Your Opportunity:
  • Responsible for communicating with the Project Manager, project team, and client field representative.
  • Selects and applies appropriate geophysical prospecting equipment to accurately designate underground utility layouts.
  • Operate and drive a vacuum excavation truck and perform test holes to expose utilities.
  • Complete documentation, which includes record keepings and simple mathematics legibly and accurately.
  • Selects and implements proper maintenance of traffic signage.
  • Communicate and coordinate with utility company representative.
  • Represent and communicate on behalf of T. Baker Smith and crew when encountering third parties in the field.
  • Complete daily job safety analysis forms.
  • Inspect assigned equipment to ensure proper working conditions prior to use.
  • Identify and report any equipment failure on work order maintenance form.
  • Perform work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Report incidents to the appropriate personnel and complete incident report as required.
  • Monitor work conditions and responsibly use stop work authority.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the associate is frequently required to stand; walk long distances while carrying equipment, sometimes through rugged terrain, mud, or swamp; drive and/or ride in a boat; sit; balance, stoop, kneel, and lift up to 50 pounds; use hands to operate, handle, maneuver and/or manipulate objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; use manual dexterity to operate equipment; talk and hear; Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Desired Qualifications and Requirements
  • Ability to perform physical movements and tractions, commensurate with operating heavy tools and equipment.
  • Possess basic computer skills and able to learn and understand new software.
  • Ability to operate surveying instruments, boats, airboats, GPS, all-terrain vehicles, and other equipment necessary to obtain survey data.
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the associate is generally outdoors and is exposed to the weather. Associate will ride in a motorized vehicle and is frequently exposed to the noise, dust, smells, and other environmental factors present in such situations.
