Associate Field Nurse Case Manager - Workers' Compensation (California)

The Associate Nurse Case Manager is an entry-level position designed for Registered Nurses beginning a career in workers' compensation case management. Under the supervision of the Case Management Department Manager and a designated mentor, the Associate Nurse Case Manager will support the field case management team in the coordination of medical care, treatment planning, and communication with stakeholders. This role provides structured exposure to the intricacies of workers' compensation and field case management, with the goal of building knowledge, skills, and confidence to transition into an independent Field Nurse Case Manager role.
This is a remote, full-time, non-exempt position, eligible for overtime pay per California labor law.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist field case managers in coordinating care, scheduling appointments, and monitoring treatment progress.
- Shadow experienced field case managers during provider visits, independent medical examinations, andreturn-to-work planning sessions.
- Gain working knowledge of workers' compensation terminology, processes, and regulations.
- Document case activity, communications, and treatment updates under supervision.
- Support case managers with preparing reports, correspondence, and treatment summaries.
- Participate in case reviews, team meetings, and training sessions.
- Develop skills in patient advocacy, provider communication, and employer/insurer collaboration.
- Uphold confidentiality and compliance standards in accordance with state, federal, and company requirements.
- Additional duties as assigned
Development Pathway
- Work closely with a mentor to receive structured guidance and feedback.
- Participate in ongoing education on case management best practices, workers' compensation law, and medical cost management.
- Progressively take on more independent responsibilities as competency is demonstrated.
- Successfully transition to a Field Nurse Case Manager role upon meeting performance, knowledge, and experience benchmarks.
Reporting Structure
- Reports directly to the Case Management Department Manager
- Receives mentorship and day-to-day guidance from an experienced Field Nurse Case Manager, as assigned by the Case Management Department Manager.
Required Qualifications
- Active California RN license (required).
- Bilingual in Spanish or Tagalog (preferred).
- Must be physically located in California; this is a field-based position requiring in-person visits.
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience.
- Proficiency with Windows-based platforms and Microsoft Word (required).
- Ability to produce grammatically correct, thorough, and professional reports (required).
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in the field and from home.
- Valid driver's license; ability to travel regionally within assigned area.
- Preferred: Case management certification (CCM, COHN, CPDM)
