Job Summary
The Registered Nurse provides nursing care to patients of all ages in the immediate post-operative period.
Duties
I. Responsibilities and Authorities:
  • Provides nursing care to patients of all ages
  • Conducts an initial and ongoing assessment designed to gather data relevant to the patient's individual needs and age group
  • Recovers surgical patient receiving anesthesia following established routine
  • Assesses and provides for patient needs of daily living, privacy and safe environment
  • Assesses symptoms and changes in patient's condition and responds appropriately
  • Initiates nursing orders and notifies physicians as indicated
  • Administers medications and completes treatments accurately and on time
  • Responds in a therapeutic manner to patient behavior
  • Practices Medical-Surgical Asepsis
  • Responds to emergency situations appropriately
  • Practices department and unit standards of care
  • Demonstrates proper telephone and intercom etiquette
  • Keep abreast of new changes occurring in the Surgery Department
  • Keep abreast of new techniques and procedures
  • Understand and perform standardization of set-ups
  • Economical use of supplies
  • Knowledge of fire and disaster procedure
  • Knowledge of cardiac arrest procedures
  • Know location of fire alarms, fire extinguishers and fire hoses
  • Takes PACU call as assigned
  • Performs other duties as assigned
II. Maintains Written and Verbal Communication Cycle:
  • Documents recovery progression on Post Anesthesia record
  • Communicates pertinent information to other members of the health care team
  • Transmits concise report that includes pertinent events of Operating Room and Post Anesthesia unit
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and self
III. Demonstrates Professional Responsibilities in the Work Setting:
  • Practices problem solving approach (Identify, Gather Facts and Implement Plan)
  • Completes physician orders accurately: Seeks clarification when indicated
  • Accepts constructive criticism to upgrade professional abilities
  • Offers assistance and/or instruction to co-workers
  • Participates in professional development activities
  • Participates in unit meetings and educational activities in order to develop skills and grow in awareness
  • Demonstrates proper use of time card
  • Maintains a professional and courteous manner in interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships
  • Demonstrates professional work habits in attendance and organization

Lifting Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to handle or feel objects. The employee is frequently required to walk or stand for exteded periods, occasionally required to sit, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch. Wears personal protective equipment as required. Generally lifting objects not more than 50 Ibs. and/or carrying objects weighing 20 Ibs. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 Ibs. with help.
