 About the Role

The Cardiovascular Interventional Suite is an 8 bed and 2 lab procedural unit. The patient population consists of adult patients. The Registered Nurse cares for patients in the Pre, Intra and Post Procedure areas. The Registered Nurse assists procedural physicians with cardiac catheterizations, PCIs, peripheral vascular procedures, pacemaker insertions (permanent and temporary), various interventional radiology procedures and special and/or emergency procedures, both on scheduled time and in an on-call capacity.  Prepares equipment and patients for procedures. Monitors and records all hemodynamic and angiographic data obtained during procedures.  Provides office function support, environmental cleaning of suites, supply management and inventory. Provides transportation of patients within the hospital and out to exit.  Assists in training of new staff members.

Pre-Procedure: Prepares patients by creating a Plan of Care, reviewing medical histories, starting IVs, obtaining informed consent, performing cardiac monitoring and ensuring all lab results are accurate.

Intra-Procedure: Fulfills dynamic roles including acting as a circulator (administers medications/sedation), scrub (assists the cardiologist with instruments, set up of equipment and sterile field), or monitor (records events and vital signs). The Registered Nurse also assists with bedside procedures including TEE’S, Cardioversions, port removals, etc.

Post-Procedure: Manages the recovery phase by continuously monitoring vitals, managing the catheter access site, assessing for complications, and coordinating discharge or unit transfers. Other services provided include monitoring and care of patients with Impella ventricular assist devices, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, Pulmonary Artery Catheters, and Transcutaneous or transvenous pacemakers.

Call Requirement: Requires rotating on-call shifts for emergency interventions (including but not limited to STEMIs, cardiac and vascular emergencies) during nights, weekends, and holidays.

Patient Assessments: Incorporates appropriate assessment and intervention skills that are age-specific in all interactions and delivery of nursing care.  Assesses patients' physical/psycho-social status. Analyzes relevant data. Integrates assessment results in care planning, goals and outcomes. Provides for therapeutic interventions based on continued assessment, prescribed orders and input from other care providers. Provides for adequate pain management, manages IV therapy and administers medications according to critical elements. Provides for patient/colleague/self-safety and protection.

Communication: Communicates with patients, colleagues, providers, and management in an accurate, considerate, and timely manner. Applies patient-specific communication skills in interactions that are culturally sensitive & appropriate to age. Language barriers and sensory & cognitive deficits are accommodated. Provides reports that are pertinent and concise using SBAR. Documents in a complete, timely and concise manner.

Problem-Solving: Employs critical thinking skills to achieve outcomes and solve problems. Practices within limits of experience/capability. Collects and integrates data from multiple sources and seeks assistance/information appropriately. Analyzes data critically in order to support clinical decision-making. Displays an ability to solve problems, reason and learn to utilize evidenced-based practice.

Caring Relationships: Engages in caring relationships that integrate the influence of the human experience of health, illness, and/or healing. Relationship-based care is fostered with patients, their families and co-workers to create a caring and healing environment where pts/their families are the center of caring processes. Initiates non-task-related introduction, converses at eye level when able, uses touch as appropriate, keeps patients/families informed, involves patients/families in decision-making, anticipates needs, responds to concerns in a timely manner, rounds frequently on the 3 P's when applicable. Protects patient autonomy, dignity and rights. Advocates for patients/families, including obtaining advanced directives when applicable.  Expedites discharges per guidelines.

Time Management: Manages own work and material resources effectively. Delivers organized care by prioritizing care needs and tasks effectively. Positively adapts to changes in patients' condition, assignment and expectations. 

Leadership: Applies leadership skills consistent with role and experience. Delegates and/or assign care that is consistent with the role, scope of practice, and abilities of the recipient. Provides feedback pertinent to the situation that is positive and/or provides co-workers educational opportunities. Co-ordinates care within the multidisciplinary team. Manages conflict in a capable, effective manner. Actively participates and promotes professional practice by participating in committees, councils, policy development, or professional organizations.

Teaching: Incorporates teaching in the delivery of care to promote health and prevent disease. Provides information to patient/family with consideration to individual needs. Assess for barriers to learning and motivation. Teaches patient/family to safely take and monitor the effects of medications. Prepares a patient/family for prescribed treatment/procedure/discharge. Consults a multidisciplinary team as appropriate to enhance patient/family education. Provides counseling for health behaviors.

 What You Bring

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Candidates with AAS in Nursing who will complete BSN within five years of date of hire will be considered.

Experience: Cath Lab and/or Interventional Radiology experience strongly preferred. Alternatively, Critical Care (ICU or ED) experience, minimum 1 year, accepted.
