Job description
The JUNIOR GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER works under the general supervision of a Geotechnical/CMT Project Manager to perform assignments requiring application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria. Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced professional. Geotechnical engineers may work both in the field and the office.
This position is the entry level position for geotechnical engineers. Field investigation includes site walkovers for gathering data, test location layout, logging of subsurface conditions and test results during geotechnical and environmental drilling operations, implementing field tests and investigating computer-generated analysis. Office duties include laboratory testing, interpreting lab results and calculating analytical findings, using computer programs for analysis and design.
Data is then evaluated for the preparation of geotechnical report of findings and recommendations. Performing geotechnical analysis and studies to assess site conditions through geotechnical exploration, field and environmental investigations and laboratory analysis Oversee field monitoring and testing of soils including boring investigations and soil type classification Prepare written plans and reports related to site investigations, assessments, and remediation activities. Projects may include construction projects focusing on earthwork and structural foundations; well design and sampling; environmental assessments including Phase I/II site assessments; seismic risk assessments.
Analyze geotechnical findings, perform appropriate calculations and prepare data reports to Project Manager Interact with team members to complete the assigned tasks on-time and within budget Perform basic office administration tasks when needed Assist Project Manager in design and evaluation of construction (i.e. retaining wall design, pile analysis, pavement design etc.) Assist with EMC's MTC verified COE laboratory testing Develop design drawings and specifications for construction projectsEDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university. 0-2 years' experience in the field of geotechnical engineering is preferred
Experience in Geotechnical report preparation and development of appropriate Geotechnical recommendations preferred. E.I.T. or G.I.T
is preferred. Valid Driver's License - Must be insurable by fleet insurer; driving history will be reviewed by agent and underwriter Basic computer skills (e.g., Microsoft office suite) required, with more advanced database, modeling, and GIS experience a plus. Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate in English with internal and external clients
Able to read and interpret plans and specifications. Able to make engineering design computations and check, design, and prepare engineering plans and studies. Able to perform mathematical computations as applied to engineering problems.
Knowledge of the methods and equipment used in construction. Ability to perform designing and drafting assignments. Ability to interpret specification and contract essentials.
Working knowledge of CAD and Microsoft Office. Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service. Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with OSHA guidelines and directives, in conjunction with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards The employee will be at times exposed to outside weather conditions such as wet and/or humid environments, extreme cold and/or heat, dusty and noisy work environments. Must be able to perform tasks that require long-term standing and/or repetitive motions May be required to drive long distances daily The job schedule may include some nights and weekends as needed.
Travel, overtime, and moderate physical work will routinely be required. While travel requirements are project-specific and will vary, applicant should have the ability to travel approximately 30% or greater.
