What does an Entry Level RF Filter Design Engineer do?

An Entry Level RF Filter Design Engineer assists in designing and testing radio frequency (RF) filters used in wireless communication systems. Their responsibilities include supporting senior engineers in developing filter prototypes, performing simulations, and analyzing test results to ensure the filters meet required specifications. They also help with documentation, troubleshooting, and collaborating with other engineering teams. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a background in electrical engineering and a strong interest in RF technologies.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level RF Filter Design Engineers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level RF Filter Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as understanding complex filter topologies, meeting stringent performance specifications, and learning specialized simulation tools. Additionally, translating theoretical designs into manufacturable products can be demanding due to real-world constraints like component tolerances and PCB layout limitations. To overcome these hurdles, new engineers benefit from seeking mentorship, actively participating in team design reviews, and dedicating time to hands-on prototyping and testing. Collaboration with manufacturing and test engineering teams also helps build a practical understanding that complements theoretical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level RF Filter Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level RF Filter Design Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, especially RF and microwave theory, typically supported by a related bachelor's degree. Familiarity with simulation tools like ADS (Advanced Design System) or HFSS, and experience with network analyzers and PCB design software, are commonly required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are important soft skills for this role. These qualifications ensure the engineer can design, test, and optimize high-performance RF filters that meet specific technical requirements in communications and electronics industries.

Job description

Description
The Mannik & Smith Group (MSG) is a people-focused, award-winning, full-service consulting firm offering civil and geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, planning, landscape architecture, agriculture, surveying, and construction support. Our talented team of 650+ professionals delivers integrated planning, design, engineering, and construction solutions.
Design Southeast Michigan's Future From a Pretty Cool Office
MSG is growing, and we're looking for a motivated Civil Design Engineer with 0-2 years of experience and solid Autodesk Civil 3D skills to join our Detroit, MI office โ€” which, fair warning, has serious industrial character. Big open space, the kind of place where you can actually picture yourself building a career. You'll support engineers and project managers in producing civil/site design plans, reports, and calculations for municipal infrastructure and private development projects across the region โ€” real technical work that builds real skills, not busywork.
And we back that growth with more than a cool office: this role comes with a guaranteed seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program for engineers looking to grow beyond the typical entry-level experience. Over six months, you'll take part in a hands-on curriculum covering professional development, business acumen, and project delivery โ€” including case studies, simulations, and role-play exercises โ€” covering topics like project economics, communication, and leadership fundamentals. It all wraps up with an in-person capstone event where you'll present your work and map out your goals for the year ahead. Your Future Starts With A Plan.

What You'll Do
Develop design drawings and plans using Autodesk Civil 3D, including:
  • Site grading
  • Alignments and profiles
  • Surfaces and corridors
  • Utility layouts
  • Storm sewer and sanitary sewer networks
Prepare components of engineering packages such as:
  • Construction drawings
  • Quantities and cost estimates
  • Drainage calculations and reports
  • Permit submittals
Assist senior engineers and project managers with:
  • Technical analysis
  • Project coordination
  • Quality control reviews
  • Scheduling and task planning
  • Get out of the office for periodic field visits โ€” site assessments, measurements, and construction support
  • Make sure every deliverable meets municipal, county, and state standards

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field
  • EIT preferredย
  • 1โ€“3 years of civil/site design experience โ€” recent grads with strong internship or co-op experience are encouraged to apply
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D for drafting and basic design
  • A solid grasp of civil engineering concepts, including grading, utilities, stormwater, and site layout
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort working in a team-oriented environment

Why MSG?
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Health insurance with HSA option, Vision, Dental, Life
  • Flexible schedule
  • Paid time off
  • Referral program
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Catalytic Coaching โ€” a personalized development plan built to grow your contributions today and your opportunities tomorrow. At MSG, bringing out the best in our people isn't a slogan โ€” it's how we operate.
