Mechanical Design Engineer – Custom Automation - Madison Heights

Shibuya Hoppmann, a recognized leader in the design and manufacture of custom automation, parts feeding, and assembly systems, has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Design Engineer – Custom Automation at our Madison Heights, Virginia facility.

Shibuya Hoppmann designs and builds high-performance automation equipment for the pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer products, and packaging industries. This position is an excellent opportunity for a mechanical engineer with several years of design experience who is looking to expand expertise in custom automation and take on increasing responsibility throughout the machine design process.

The Mechanical Design Engineer will work as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team and contribute to projects from initial concept through detailed design, manufacturing, machine assembly, debug, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and customer installation.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Design custom automated assembly equipment, tooling, and mechanical systems using SOLIDWORKS, from concept development through detailed manufacturing drawings and release.
  • Develop mechanical concepts and perform feasibility studies for new customer applications.
  • Prepare manufacturing drawings, bills of material, and other engineering documentation.
  • Work with customers and internal teams to understand application requirements and support design reviews.
  • Support machine assembly, debug, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), and customer installation.
  • Collaborate with controls engineers, manufacturing, project management, and sales throughout project execution.
  • Select and apply standard mechanical components, including bearings, gearboxes, servos, pneumatic actuators, conveyors, and other machine elements.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical design and machine performance issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Travel occasionally to customer facilities to conduct site surveys, validate application requirements, assess installation constraints, and provide engineering support during machine commissioning and customer acceptance.
  • Working knowledge of machine design principles and mechanical components, including:
    • Cams
    • Gearboxes
    • Bearings
    • Pneumatic actuators
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One to three years of mechanical design experience, preferably in automation, machinery, or a related manufacturing environment.
  • Experience designing machinery, automation equipment, tooling, or special-purpose equipment.
  • Proficiency with SOLIDWORKS.
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, controls, project management, and sales teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing equipment for pharmaceutical, medical devices, or other GMP-regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Experience with SOLIDWORKS/INVENTOR 3D MODELING.
  • Experience with machine debug, FAT, or customer installation.
Compensation

$40.00–$50.00 per hour, based on experience, education, and demonstrated automation design expertise.
