How much do entry level remote sensing jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for entry level remote sensing in the United States is $32.69, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $30.77 and $34.62 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are entry level remote sensing jobs?

Entry level remote sensing jobs are positions designed for individuals who are new to the field of remote sensing, often recent graduates or those with limited experience. These roles typically involve collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data from satellite or airborne sensors to support environmental monitoring, mapping, agriculture, or other applications. Entry level positions may include tasks such as image processing, data management, or assisting with research projects. Employers often look for candidates with a background in geography, environmental science, GIS, or related disciplines, and familiarity with remote sensing software and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Remote Sensing professional, and why are they important?

To succeed as an Entry Level Remote Sensing professional, you typically need a background in geography, environmental science, or related fields, along with foundational knowledge of remote sensing principles. Familiarity with GIS software (like ArcGIS or QGIS), image processing tools (such as ENVI or ERDAS Imagine), and sometimes programming languages like Python or R is important. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills help in interpreting data and collaborating with team members. These competencies enable accurate data analysis and reporting, which are crucial for informed decision-making in environmental monitoring, mapping, and resource management.

What types of projects and technologies do entry-level remote sensing professionals typically work with?

Entry-level remote sensing professionals often work on projects involving satellite imagery analysis, data processing, and environmental monitoring. They may use Geographic Information Systems (GIS), image classification software, and programming languages like Python or R to interpret and visualize spatial data. Collaboration with other GIS specialists, environmental scientists, and data analysts is common, and responsibilities can include data acquisition, pre-processing, and the creation of maps or reports to support decision-making. This role offers exposure to a range of applications, from agriculture to urban planning, and provides a solid foundation for career advancement into more specialized or leadership positions.

What is the difference between Entry Level Remote Sensing vs Entry Level GIS Technician?

AspectEntry Level Remote SensingEntry Level GIS Technician
Required CredentialsDegree in Remote Sensing, Geography, or related field; basic GIS knowledgeDegree in GIS, Geography, or related field; GIS software familiarity
Work EnvironmentField data collection, satellite image analysis, office-based data processingOffice-based map creation, spatial data management, data entry
Industry UsageEnvironmental monitoring, agriculture, defense, researchUrban planning, utilities, government agencies, environmental agencies

Entry Level Remote Sensing and Entry Level GIS Technician roles share foundational skills in spatial data and GIS software. However, remote sensing focuses more on satellite and aerial imagery analysis, while GIS technicians primarily handle map creation and spatial data management. Both roles are essential in geospatial industries and often overlap in skills and work environments.
