Job description

Substation Protection & Control Design Engineer

Join a high-impact project supporting Evergy in Topeka, KS through an 18‑month renewable contract (with the possibility of direct hire). You’ll apply power engineering fundamentals to design and refine protection and control systems that keep the grid safe and reliable.

A day in this role

You start your morning reviewing redlines to typical substation and transmission P&C drawings, verifying relay logic against schematics and wiring diagrams. Midday, you finalize elementary drawings and settings for protection schemes, then close out by validating the project bill of materials and coordinating with peers to keep deliverables on track in a fast-paced environment.

What you’ll do
  • Learn and apply the company’s design philosophy for protection and control.
  • Review and redline substation protection and transmission line P&C drawings aligned to standard designs.
  • Evaluate and confirm detailed system protection and control project bills of material.
  • Develop elementary drawings, relay logic, and settings for system protection designs.
  • Collaborate effectively across teams; manage multiple priorities under pressure with strong attention to detail.
What you bring
  • Utility background tied to electric substations, generation, and transmission line equipment control and fault protection.
  • Fluency with schematic, wiring, and logic diagrams.
  • Knowledge of generation, transmission, and distribution relays and protection schemes.
  • Dependable, self‑motivated, detail‑driven; excellent organizational and proofreading skills.
  • Clear communicator who works well with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, and databases (preferred).

  • Hourly Pay Rate is up to $84.00

Education

Accredited Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
