Entry Level Quant Developer information

What is an entry level quant developer?

Entry level quant developers are professionals who use mathematical models, programming, and data analysis to help financial institutions make trading decisions or manage risk. They typically work with large datasets and implement algorithms in programming languages like Python, C++, or Java. While entry level roles may focus more on coding and supporting senior quants, they provide a strong foundation in both finance and technology. These roles often require strong analytical skills, basic financial knowledge, and proficiency in at least one programming language.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level quant developer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Quant Developer, you need strong quantitative skills, programming proficiency (such as Python, C++, or Java), and a background in mathematics, statistics, or a related field. Familiarity with financial modeling tools, statistical analysis software, and version control systems like Git is often required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating complex data into actionable insights. These skills and qualities are essential for developing robust quantitative models and supporting data-driven decision-making in fast-paced financial environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry level quant developers when transitioning from academia to a professional finance environment?

Entry level quant developers often find the transition from academic settings to professional finance environments challenging due to the fast-paced nature of the industry and the need for effective collaboration with traders, analysts, and senior developers. In addition to applying their quantitative and programming skills, new hires must quickly adapt to production-level coding standards, version control systems, and the need for rigorous code reviews. Time-sensitive problem-solving and balancing multiple projects are common, making communication and prioritization essential skills. Proactively seeking mentorship and being open to feedback can significantly ease this transition and foster professional growth.

Job description

Software Engineer, Entry Level

Company: Koop

Position: Software Engineer

Type: Full-Time

Location: San Francisco, CA (in-person)

You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to qualify for the program

Who We Are

Koop lets B2B and B2G startups and growth-stage companies unlock growth by taking care of regulatory and contractual compliance, security, and insurance requirements in a single, AI-powered platform. Companies in AI, Robotics, Energy & Climate, Aerospace & Defense, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Fintech, and more industries rely on Koop daily to satisfy all kinds of requirements from enterprises and the government. Our value proposition is to help engineering, finance, ops, and legal teams at early-stage companies to speed up procurement, free up resources, and showcase trust within a single, easy-to-use platform that delivers an amazing user experience.

The world is accelerating: new products and services in AI & Software 2.0, Robotics, Energy & Climate, Aerospace & Defense, Manufacturing, and other verticals are already getting adopted at an increasing rate. However, private enterprises and the government impose stringent contractual requirements on companies bringing those new products and services into the world. In turn, startups have to carry the burden of compliance certifications, custom security questionnaires, and high-limit insurance policies. Koop’s mission is to make it simpler to innovate while protecting the world from a new generation of risks that comes with new and highly technical products and services.

We are post-product-market-fit, post-traction, with a clear execution roadmap and strong support from our growing customer base. Koop is backed by leading investors, including Ubiquity Ventures, AlleyCorp, Fusion Fund, Bee Partners, and Hyundai and Kia. Currently, we are growing our insurance team to reach ambitious milestones over the next 12-24 months. We value a strong work ethic, meritocracy, the ability to think from the first principles, creative problem-solving, excellent communication skills, and technical mindsets.

Job Description

We are looking for a Software Engineer who will have a rare opportunity to build market-leading products and dive into the depth of AI-first software development over the next 24 months. Working side-by-side with the founding team, this person will be a key contributor to turning Koop into a go-to brand for thousands of customers. Specifically, the candidate will:

  • Work in a high pressure, no-BS environment
  • Deliver results, not reports/diagrams/plans/presentations
  • Learning is #1 priority. Learn to build and to ship
  • No red tape, no bureaucracy, few meetings
  • Use the latest AI tools in ways that no one thought of so far, and explore how software will be developed in the next 5+ years
  • Gain real-world experience building products that ship to real customers
  • Push the boundaries of latest tools and approaches

You will join a team of product builders, software engineers, quantitative modelers, insurance professionals, and emerging risks visionaries, all bound together by an incredible drive to define, build, and scale a powerful regulatory readiness platform.

Job Requirements
  • Develop new products while working alongside the experienced and highly motivated team
  • Vibe code; prompt, generate, iterate, or otherwise deliver good quality production code

  • Typescript, React, Python, Go and Terraform
  • Mostly new products with little legacy code
  • Explore new architectures, novel technologies and frameworks
  • We have proprietary technologies that are super cool, we need help developing and improving them
Qualifications
  • Required: some experience programming, in academic or professional setting
  • Bonus: show us your side projects, something you’ve built
  • Preferred: recently graduated or currently enrolled in a Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related program
  • Bonus: background in Mathematics, Physics or related hard science field
  • Experience using the latest tools and technologies: Bolt.new, Cursor, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.
  • Strong interest in building the future of software engineering
  • Thriving in a high pressure environment
Administrative
  • In-person job setting
  • Competitive salary and generous equity
  • Paid professional development (e.g. courses, materials, events, etc.)
  • Tremendous growth opportunity (professionally, personally, and financially)
Why Koop Technologies
  • We are building a category-defining platform that will uniquely protect the world of emerging technology companies
  • Rare opportunity to join an early-stage company that is building for the exponential growth
  • Work with an energetic team coming from diverse professional backgrounds in product development, software engineering, quantitative modeling, insurance, and sales
  • Join a fast-paced, rewarding work environment that will bring the best out of you and experience tremendous professional growth in a short period of time
  • Join the mission to help protect the world from a new generation of risks
