How to get an internship at a publishing company?

To secure an entry level publishing internship, applicants should develop strong writing and editing skills, often demonstrated through coursework or personal projects. Relevant experience can be gained through volunteering, internships, or internships at related media organizations, and applying through company websites or internship programs with tailored resumes and cover letters increases chances of success.

Can I be an intern with no experience?

Entry level publishing internships typically do not require prior experience, making them accessible to students or individuals new to the field. Candidates should demonstrate strong communication skills, a basic understanding of publishing processes, and a willingness to learn. Some internships may prefer or require familiarity with tools like Microsoft Office or content management systems.

What are entry-level roles in publishing?

Entry-level publishing roles typically include positions such as editorial assistants, publishing interns, and production assistants. These roles often require strong communication skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with publishing tools like Microsoft Office or content management systems. They provide foundational experience for careers in editing, proofreading, and publishing operations.

What is the difference between Entry Level Publishing Internships vs Publishing Assistant?

AspectEntry Level Publishing InternshipsPublishing Assistant
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or college student; some internships prefer related courseworkAssociate's or Bachelor's degree in publishing, communications, or related field
Work EnvironmentTemporary, internship setting within publishing houses or media companiesFull-time or part-time role within publishing teams, often with more responsibilities
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by publishers to train and evaluate potential future employeesEntry-level staff supporting publishing operations, often a stepping stone to higher roles

Entry Level Publishing Internships are typically short-term, educational positions aimed at gaining industry experience, while Publishing Assistants are regular staff members with ongoing responsibilities. Internships often require minimal credentials and serve as a training ground, whereas Publishing Assistants usually need some related education and perform more substantive tasks within the publishing process.

How to get a job in publishing with no experience?

Entry level publishing internships are accessible to candidates with little or no experience by demonstrating strong writing, editing, or research skills through coursework, personal projects, or volunteering. Applying to internships, building a portfolio, and gaining familiarity with publishing tools like Microsoft Office or Adobe InDesign can improve chances; networking and expressing enthusiasm for the industry also help.

Job description

About BuzzFeed, Inc.

BuzzFeed, Inc. (Nasdaq: BZFD) is home to the best of the internet with a mission to spread joy and truth. Across entertainment, news, food, pop culture, and commerce, our brands drive conversation and inspire what audiences watch, read, and buy now - and into the future. Born on the internet in 2006, BuzzFeed, Inc. is committed to improving it: providing trusted, quality, brand-safe entertainment to hundreds of millions of people; making content on the internet more inclusive, empathetic, and creative; and inspiring our audience to live better lives.

Business Area: Content

Job Category: Editorial

Hourly: $20.00 an hour

Three-Month Contract

Union Status: Non-Union

BuzzFeed Inc. is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. We reserve the ability to adjust the final compensation for this role based on the final candidate's experience, skillset, certifications, and geography.

The Community You Will Join

BuzzFeed is looking for a Social Video Fellow to ideate, produce, and publish creative short-form video content across TikTok and Instagram. If you're passionate about making people laugh, cry, comment, and share - and you live and breathe internet trends - this is the place for you. This is an entry-level opportunity for early-career creators obsessed with social media and ready to make an impact.

The BuzzFeed Fellowship is a year-long program for aspiring and hungry content creators eager to hone their skills and to learn by doing. The program is a crash course in consistently creating content that captures readers' attention, advances the cultural conversation, and reaches a massive audience.

Fellows will work with and learn from members of the BuzzFeed social and editorial teams - some of the smartest, weirdest, most creative, and most viral creators out there. This is the perfect opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in digital media. You won't be running errands for senior staff or transcribing someone else's interviews. The Fellowship is fun and inspiring, but also fast-paced and challenging.

This is a full-time, paid position starting at $20/hour, based out of our NYC offices, with a hybrid schedule that includes coming into the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

All application materials must be submitted when you apply. Applications will close Thursday, July 9th by 5 PM EST.  The intended (and tentative) start date for this Fellowship is August 3, 2026.

A Typical Day

  • Create compelling short-form video content - from concept to publishing - for BuzzFeed's TikTok and Instagram accounts.
  • Stay on top of emerging trends, memes, and sounds - and pitch creative, culturally relevant content ideas.
  • Film, edit, and optimize videos quickly using mobile-first tools like CapCut, Canva, and in-app editing features.
  • Be both behind and in front of the camera when needed.
  • Write witty, platform-optimized captions and copy that align with BuzzFeed's brand voice.
  • Engage with audiences by responding to comments, surfacing insights, and participating in community conversations.
  • Experiment and learn - analyze content performance, iterate based on feedback, and keep pushing creative boundaries.

Who You Are

  • A creative self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, internet-first environment.
  • Some experience (internships, freelance, personal projects) creating short-form video content for social media platforms including TikTok, Instagram or YouTube.
  • Comfortable filming yourself or others, editing on the fly, and turning around content quickly.
  • Obsessed with social media trends, memes, culture, and what makes content shareable.
  • Comfortable with using mobile video editing apps (e.g., CapCut, InShot, native TikTok/Instagram tools) and basic design platforms (e.g., Canva). Proficiency with more advanced editing tools (Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, etc.) is a plus.
  • A team player with strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit.
  • Excited to grow your skills, try new things, and maybe even go viral.
To Apply:

Please submit the following when applying to be a Social Video Fellow:

  • Instead of a formal cover letter, please include a few short paragraphs about what topics you'd want to cover for BuzzFeed as a Social Video Fellow, and what interests you about the content BuzzFeed makes (or what you think we could be doing better!)
  • Create 1-2 TikToks or IG Reels based on a BuzzFeed quiz, and submit one video showcasing your video editing skills (can be from a previous project or a video from a personal account). Make sure at least one video features you in front of the camera. Please include the links to the posts at the end of your cover letter!
  • Provide links to your public social media accounts.
  • Attach a resume - keep it to one page!

Use of artificial intelligence or an LLM such as ChatGPT during the interview process may be grounds for rejection of your application.
