What does an Entry Level Project Engineer do?

An Entry Level Project Engineer assists in planning, coordinating, and overseeing engineering projects under the supervision of senior engineers or project managers. Typical responsibilities include preparing technical documents, assisting with project scheduling, monitoring progress, and communicating with team members and stakeholders to ensure project goals are met. They may also help troubleshoot issues, ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and support quality assurance efforts. This role provides valuable hands-on experience for recent graduates or those new to the engineering field, often serving as a stepping stone to more advanced engineering positions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Project Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Project Engineer, a solid background in engineering principles, a relevant degree, and basic project management knowledge are essential. Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, and industry-specific software, along with any relevant certifications like EIT (Engineer-in-Training), is often required. These competencies enable effective project coordination, technical accuracy, and successful collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.

What are some common challenges faced by Entry Level Project Engineers during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Entry Level Project Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to fast-paced project timelines, learning to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and managing multiple tasks simultaneously. It's common to feel overwhelmed at first, but proactively seeking guidance from senior engineers, staying organized with project management tools, and regularly checking in with your supervisor can help you succeed. Embracing a willingness to learn and asking questions will also build your technical confidence and foster strong working relationships.

Job description

About PEAKโ€ฆ

At PEAK Construction Corporation, we do more than build facilities โ€” we build value, trust, long-term partnerships, and a culture where people come first. Headquartered in Rosemont, IL, with regional offices in East Windsor, NJ and Charlestonโ€“St. George, SC, weโ€™re a national design-build leader trusted across the industry and country.

We take pride in delivering excellence often beginning with land development and site analysis across Industrial, Freezer/Cooler, Hospitality, Healthcare, Commercial, and Specialty markets โ€” but what truly sets us apart is our people. Our mantra is simple:ย Do The Right Thing. That commitment extends to how we treat clients, partners, and especially our team.

We are looking for a forward-thinkingย Project Engineerย to carry out that mission even further.

About Your Role with PEAKโ€ฆ

You will support both field and office operations, ensuring seamless coordination between subcontractors, the PEAK team, and project stakeholders. Your role will encompass safety oversight, cost control, scheduling, document management, and proactive risk mitigation. With a strong foundation in project planning and CPM scheduling, you will help maintain project momentum and ensure timely delivery. Your technical proficiency, leadership, and collaborative mindset will be key in fostering operational excellence and upholding PEAKโ€™s standards of quality and safety.

Where You Will Make a Differenceโ€ฆ

Safety & Risk Management Youย will observe job-site conditions and report potential risks to the Project Manager and Superintendent. Youโ€™ll document all incidents thoroughly and assist in preparing for third-party safety audits, ensuring immediate follow-up and compliance with PEAKโ€™s safety protocols.

Document Control & Complianceย You will manage submittals, RFIs, change orders, and project correspondence, maintain organized logs and ensure timely responses. Youโ€™ll oversee the preparation and monitoring of submittal schedules and ensure all documentation aligns with project specifications and timelines.

Scheduling & Resource Coordination Youย will share responsibility for meeting contractual schedule requirements, participating in the creation and bi-weekly updates of the Master Project Schedule. Youโ€™ll collaborate with the project team during pre-construction and procurement phases to define critical path timelines and resource needs.

Communication & Collaboration Youย will coordinate interactions between the Peak team and subcontractors, fostering a productive and transparent work environment. Youโ€™ll attend and document project meetings, maintain status reports, and ensure timely communication with ownership and stakeholder.

Closeout & Quality Assuranceย You will manage the project closeout process, including punch list generation and resolution. Youโ€™ll verify subcontractor extra work orders and ensure all project documentation is complete and accurate.

Leadership & Operational Excellenceย You will demonstrate a proactive management style, continually seeking out unknown risks and opportunities for improvement. Your ability to mentor junior team members and handle stressful situations with foresight will contribute to a resilient and high-performing project team.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ability to work collaboratively and constructively with othersย
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skillsย
  • Effective communicator with leadership capabilitiesย
  • Self-motivated and able to prioritize competing demandsย
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and foster team developmentย
  • Resilient under pressure with a solutions-oriented mindsetย
  • Education: Bachelorโ€™s degree in a construction-related field (required)ย
  • Experience:ย
  • Entry-level position (0โ€“2 yearsโ€™ experience)ย
  • Construction Management Internship or Co-op preferred prior to graduationย
