What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and at least one programming language, often demonstrated by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic database management, and development environments is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with team members and learn quickly. These skills are crucial for successfully building, testing, and maintaining software while adapting to evolving project requirements.

What types of projects and tasks can an entry level programmer typically expect to work on during their first year?

As an entry level programmer, you will often be assigned to support tasks such as debugging code, writing simple scripts, developing small features, and assisting with software testing. You may also update documentation and collaborate with more experienced developers on larger projects. This hands-on experience helps you become familiar with company coding standards, version control systems, and agile development processes while building a foundation for more complex assignments in the future. Teamwork and communication are important, as you’ll regularly interact with other programmers, QA testers, and sometimes project managers.

What is the difference between Entry Level Programmer vs Software Developer?

The roles overlap in skills and industry usage, but the Software Developer position generally requires more experience and responsibility.

What is an entry level programmer?

As an entry-level programmer, you use software programming languages to create and maintain applications for in-house, proprietary use or clients. You go through an onboarding process to learn your company’s code base and their processes for software development. You work on a team with other programmers and developers, and your job duties include writing code to develop software according to required specifications, testing and debugging code, creating and rolling out fixes, and publishing finished code to the production server. As you gain experience and your skillset expands, you can take on jobs with more autonomy and responsibility.

Our client is a well-established energy company with a long history of successful oil and gas exploration and production throughout the Mid-Continent region. They are committed to investing in technology, operational excellence, and employee development while providing opportunities for long-term career growth.

We are seeking an Entry-Level Operations Monitoring Technician to support overnight drilling and field operations from a centralized operations center. This position is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional with a technical background who enjoys analyzing data, solving problems, and working in a fast-paced operational environment.

You'll monitor real-time operational activity, identify potential issues, communicate with field personnel, and document important events to help ensure safe and efficient operations. This role offers an excellent opportunity to build a career in the energy industry, with a clear path into operations, field support, or technical roles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor drilling and production operations using real-time monitoring systems and operational dashboards.
  • Review equipment performance, operational data, and system alerts to identify unusual trends or potential issues.
  • Escalate operational concerns to field personnel, supervisors, or other stakeholders following established procedures.
  • Maintain detailed shift logs documenting events, communications, and operational activity.
  • Prepare thorough shift handoff reports for incoming operations personnel.
  • Analyze operational information to identify inconsistencies or performance trends.
  • Verify the accuracy of operational data entered into company systems.
  • Communicate with field teams to obtain updates and confirm operating conditions.
  • Support troubleshooting efforts by gathering and organizing operational data.
  • Track equipment status, well activity, downtime, and other key operational metrics.
  • Follow company policies, safety standards, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Develop knowledge of drilling operations, field equipment, and industry terminology.
  • Assist with additional operational reporting and data analysis projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Science, Geology, Engineering, Data Analytics, Computer Science, or another technical discipline.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to recognize trends, anomalies, and inconsistencies within operational data.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Comfortable working independently during a 12-hour overnight shift.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and comfortable learning new software systems and monitoring platforms.
  • Ability to follow established procedures while making sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous experience in oil and gas, manufacturing, industrial operations, control rooms, or operations monitoring is a plus but not required.
  • Eagerness to learn drilling operations and grow into more advanced operational roles.
