Entry Level Programmer information

What is an entry level programmer?

As an entry-level programmer, you use software programming languages to create and maintain applications for in-house, proprietary use or clients. You go through an onboarding process to learn your company’s code base and their processes for software development. You work on a team with other programmers and developers, and your job duties include writing code to develop software according to required specifications, testing and debugging code, creating and rolling out fixes, and publishing finished code to the production server. As you gain experience and your skillset expands, you can take on jobs with more autonomy and responsibility.

What types of projects and tasks can an entry level programmer typically expect to work on during their first year?

As an entry level programmer, you will often be assigned to support tasks such as debugging code, writing simple scripts, developing small features, and assisting with software testing. You may also update documentation and collaborate with more experienced developers on larger projects. This hands-on experience helps you become familiar with company coding standards, version control systems, and agile development processes while building a foundation for more complex assignments in the future. Teamwork and communication are important, as you’ll regularly interact with other programmers, QA testers, and sometimes project managers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Programmer, you need a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, algorithms, and at least one programming language, often demonstrated by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic database management, and development environments is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with team members and learn quickly. These skills are crucial for successfully building, testing, and maintaining software while adapting to evolving project requirements.

What is the difference between Entry Level Programmer vs Software Developer?

AspectEntry Level ProgrammerSoftware Developer
Required CredentialsAssociate's degree or coding bootcamp certificationBachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field often preferred
Work EnvironmentEntry-level coding tasks, supervised projectsDesign, develop, and maintain software applications
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, startups, IT departmentsSoftware firms, tech companies, enterprise IT teams

While both roles involve coding and software development, an Entry Level Programmer typically focuses on basic coding tasks under supervision, whereas a Software Developer often handles full project cycles, including design and testing. The roles overlap in skills and industry usage, but the Software Developer position generally requires more experience and responsibility.

We are looking for a Cloud Firewall Test Engineer to help ensure the quality, reliability, and securityof a cloud-delivered firewall platformbuilt on microservices. You will design and execute tests across UI, API, integration, and systemlevels, with a strong focus on automation using Playwright with Python. You'll also use AI-assisted testing toolsto speed up test creation, debugging, and coverage expansion-while applying good engineering judgment to keep tests correct and maintainable.

What You'll Do (Key Responsibilities)

  • Design, develop, and maintain automated end-to-endand APItest suites using Playwright with Python, focusing on reliability and maintainability.
  • Validate cloud firewall capabilities such as policy management, rule behavior, logging/telemetry, authentication flows, control-plane workflows, and upgradesin a microservices environment.
  • Build layered coverage across microservices (service-level API tests + critical end-to-end user journeys) to reduce flaky tests and improve signal.
  • Integrate test suites into the build and release pipeline (CI/CD), including parallel runs, reporting, and failure artifacts (logs, traces, screenshots).
  • Work closely with software engineers and product owners to review stories and acceptance criteria, improve testability, and define quality gates
  • Troubleshoot complex failures using logs/metrics/traces, drive root-cause analysis, and help prevent regressions.
  • Use AI-based tools to accelerate test development and triage (for example: generating starter test code, refactoring, summarizing failures, creating test data), while keeping quality and correctness high.
  • Contribute to test infrastructure improvements (environments, test data management, mocks/stubs, framework utilities).

Required Qualifications

6 to 8 yearsin QA/Test Engineering, SDET, or Software Engineering with a strong testing focus (we're open to strong entry-level candidates with solid projects/internships).

  • Strong hands-on Pythonskills for building automation (beyond simple scripting).
  • Hands-on experience with Playwrightfor UI automation, including maintainable patterns (page objects/fixtures) and stable locator strategies.
  • Experience testing web APIs (REST)and distributed systems; comfortable validating microservice interactions and contracts.
  • Basic to solid understanding of cloud networking/security concepts (for example: TCP/IP basics, authentication flows, and network policy behavior).
  • Familiarity with Git-based workflowsand test reporting in a build pipeline.
  • Hands on experience in testing security and networking products is a must.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have

  • Prior experience testing firewalls, network security products, or cloud-managed firewall deployments.
  • Microservices testing practices such as contract testing, API-first validation, and test isolation strategies.
  • Exposure to performance, resilience, or scale testing for cloud services.
  • Experience with Selenium (especially if you've migrated or helped migrate suites to Playwright).
  • Experience using AI-assisted tools for test authoring/debugging (for example copilots, LLM-based triage helpers, AI log analysis).

What Success Looks Like (First 90 Days)

  • You can run and debug the existing automation suite, and confidently contribute new Playwright + Python tests.
  • You add stable automated coverage for a few high-value end-to-end flows and key API scenarios.
  • You improve failure triage by producing clean artifacts (logs/traces/screenshots) and actionable root-cause notes.
