The Opportunity

This position works out of our Plymouth, MN location in the EP division.

We are seeking an experienced, high caliber R&D Engineer for designing and developing implanted medical devices and delivery systems.

As R&D Engineer, you will be part of our Electrophysiology research and development team focused on Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion. This role will be focused on development of catheter-based devices and accessories but will also involve a range of responsibilities including but not limited to test method development, build and bench testing, design of test fixtures, design analysis, 3D CAD models and documentation, material research, prototype design, manufacturing support and interface with the R&D and cross functional product development team.

What You'll Work On

  • Conceive and build working prototypes.
  • Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment.
  • Develops strong understanding of customer requirements and design requirements.
  • Effectively communicate with R&D team members.
  • Design and develop new products specific for catheter-based technology.
  • Maintain compliance with procedural and documentation requirements of Abbott, FDA , ISO and other regulatory bodies.
  • Establish test methods and conduct model development, as needed.
  • Support bench / animal testing and clinical evaluations.
  • Provides technical direction to machinists / technicians and provides helpful feedback to other engineers.
  • Run empirical and experimental analysis utilizing various analytical design tools.
  • Maintain schedule of tasks and activities.
  • Utilize structured problem-solving approaches to resolve design investigations during development.
  • Write and submit intellectual property (patents).
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies and prints.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering/related degree.
  • 2-5 years of engineering experience, preferably in Research & Development engineering in medical device or other highly regulated industry/ Master's degree may substitute for two years of experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge including a demonstrated ability to think critically, problem solve, communicate clearly both in spoken and written form, and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Experience in designing nitinol and/or catheter based devices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing design verification testing.
  • Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability.
  • Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.
