Job description

The Job THIS IS A SPECIAL DISTRICTS POSITION The Department of Public Works, Special Districts - Water and Sanitation Division is recruiting for Treatment Plant Operator I, who assist in the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants and collection systems. These positions are assigned to Special Districts only; work sites are located throughout the County, including the high and low deserts, mountains, and valleys. Under general supervision, this entry-level position is responsible for assisting with the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment and collection facilities.

Duties include operating and monitoring plant equipment such as pumps, valves, motors, and filters; reading meters and gauges to ensure efficient equipment operation; cleaning tanks and equipment; maintaining plant facilities and grounds in a clean and sanitary condition; preparing and maintaining operational records and reports; participating in an emergency on-call rotation; and responding to time-sensitive incidents at remote locations as needed. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Working Conditions: Applicants must be able to perform heavy manual labor and work outdoors in varying weather conditions; work in desert and mountainous areas, remote locations, and other locations as needed; have the ability to drive in all weather conditions; and work weekends and holidays and respond to emergency calls as needed. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and have the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend over, and crawl for extended periods in the performance of job duties for this position. Health and Physical: Persons seeking appointment to this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties established by the San Bernardino County Special Districts Department.

Certification: A valid SWRCB Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate is required at the time of hire and must be maintained throughout employment. Travel: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Assignment: Employees on call must respond by phone within one (1) hour.

Employees may be assigned to one region but are expected to work any site located throughout the County, to meet the Department's needs. Incumbents are required to be available on-call evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed. Sites/locations encompass the mountains, the deserts, and the valleys.

Minimum Requirements Must meet ALL of the following requirements: Operator-in-Training Certificate: Possession of a current State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Wastewater Grade I Treatment Operator Certificate at the time of hire. License: Must possess a valid CA Class C driver license.
