Casual Lifeguard, Salary Range E02 - 17.00

Summary of Job Purpose:Under supervision, these positions ensure effective customer service, enforce water safety regulations, oversee swimmers, teach swim lessons, maintain water balance, and facility cleanliness. The Casual Assistant Manager will also supervise staff during absence of Pool Supervisor. These positions are non-benefitted, casual positions.
Essential Functions:The class specification lists the major duties and requirements of the job and is not all-inclusive. Incumbent(s) may be expected to perform job-related duties other than those contained in this document and may be required to have specific job-related knowledge and skill.
Examples of Duties
Casual Attendant: This is the entry level position of the Eureka Swimming Pool Casual Staff. Employees working at the Attendant level work under close supervision, performing the more routine duties at the Eureka Swimming Pool. Employees at this level continue to receive training and direction.
  • Interacts positively with pool patrons; checks patrons into the pool and collects fees; receives complaints and refers to manager on duty as needed.
  • Answers the phone in a courteous and concise manner; provides information related to fees, hours, and booking parties.
  • Assists with minor maintenance and maintaining standards of facility sanitization for all areas of the pool including water maintenance, inventory of chemicals and test supplies, janitorial and laundry duties, and maintenance of pool facility grounds.
  • Functions as an essential member of the rescue team in handling incidents and emergencies in and around the pool area.
  • Maintains proper physical fitness, mental alertness, and readiness to handle emergencies.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions as required.
Casual Lifeguard:This is the intermediate level position of the Eureka Swimming Pool Casual Staff. Employees working at this level primarily work under general direction, with specific direction for more complex tasks. Employees at this level continue to receive training and direction.
  • In addition to performing duties assigned Attendants, enforces rules and regulations pertaining to pool operation and safety; supervises pool areas when in use.
  • Administers first-aid and/or CPR and performs water rescues as needed.
  • Maintains required certifications in Lifeguard, CPR/First Aid, and Water Safety Instructor.
  • Teaches private and public swim lessons.
  • Prepares facilities for special events.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Casual Attendant - Formal or informal training which ensures the ability to read, interpret, write, and perform basic math skills.
Casual Lifeguard - Current certification in Lifeguard, Basic First-Aid, and CPR for the Professional. Must be willing to train as a Water Safety Instructor. Formal or informal training which ensures the ability to read, interpret, write, and perform basic math skills.
Special Requirements:
  • Due to the Casual Lifeguard's occupational qualifications being specialized, the Casual Lifeguard is a position that can be promoted within the department without going through a recruitment process and can be accomplished within the first twelve (12) months of employment, but only after successfully completing the first three (3) months of training.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Knowledge of:basic customer service; proper telephone and computer usage; and basic cleaning procedures.
  • The Casual Lifeguard also needs knowledge of basic swim strokes; lifesaving and water techniques; rules and regulations about the swimming pool facility; emergency and dangerous situations which may occur in the pool facility; pool equipment operation and health standards; and water testing procedures.
Skills to: ability to swim basic swim strokes; complete assigned projects independently and in a timely manner; communicate effectively orally; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members, supervisors, and the public; interpret water chemical levels; work effectively under the pressure of emergencies;
  • The Casual Lifeguard also requires the ability to swim with proficiency and endurance; work in the absence of direct supervision; communicate effectively in writing.
