SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager (or designee) implement, supervise and evaluate the nursing care of each patient using a nursing process and in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. From admission to discharge plan with consideration of the aging process throughout the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Consistently applies the corporate values of respect, honesty and fairness and the constant pursuit of excellence in improving the health status of the people of the region through the provision of customer-friendly, geographically accessible and high-value services within the environment of a comprehensive integrated academic health system. Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the principles of the Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct. Responsible for the safe delivery of patient care: 1. Provides direct nursing care to patients with complex needs.

  • Implements the steps of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation) and integrate these activities with all members of the health care team.

  • Delegates and supervises nursing care activities provided by personnel assigned to assist in the provision of nursing care such as, but not limited to, Licensed Practical nurses, Nursing Student Associates, Certified Nursing assistants, Technician, Unit Assistants and Unit Service Coordinators

  • Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care activities and assures compliance to standards.

  • Manages the implementation of therapeutic/diagnostic orders as per policy.

  • Evaluates and communicates to physician patient response and condition changes.

  • Keeps family informed of care status and changes in that status.

  • Coordinates discharge planning for patients, families utilizing hospital and community resources.

  • Teaches patients and families in accordance with standards and patient teaching guidelines.

  • Maintains patient and family confidentiality according to hospital policy.

  • Service as an active patient and family advocate.

  • Documents according to policy and procedure. Responsible for emergency and safety conduct

  • Maintains Basic Life Support certification. Identified cardiopulmonary arrest and initiates CPR.

  • Demonstrates adherence to Universal Precautions, Safety Programs and other infection control measures.

  • Review fire, disaster, and infection control in manual.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform responsibilities in emergency/code situation. Checks emergency equipment.

  • Reports unsafe situations to the Registered Nurse or to the Clinical Manager.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. Must have current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island or in another state that participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact. Successful completion of the Hospital's Patient Care Delivery Orientation Program, which includes entry level credentialing of selected skills. Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support. ACLS certification required.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years' medical-surgical nursing experience and telemetry experience required. Two years Endoscopy experience preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

General hospital environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care. Position required frequent standing, walking and sitting.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within department policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of department policies and procedure may be required.
