Job description

Job Title: Cog Railway - Engineer
Job Pay Rate: $18.00/Hr.
Job Summary:

The Engineer is a highly skilled operating role responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant handling of Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway trains. The Engineer operates locomotives in accordance with all operating rules, signals, and safety requirements, and works closely with the Conductor and Train Dispatcher to deliver safe, reliable trips for all guests. The Engineer may also perform duties of the Train Conductor.

Train Operation & Safety
  • Operate locomotives safely, adhering to speed restrictions, signal indications, and all operating rules.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections, completing safety and mechanical checks each day.
  • Monitor gauges, controls, and operating behavior continuously during trips; respond immediately to irregularities.
  • Coordinate train movement and service execution with the Conductor.
  • Assist with routine servicing and interior/exterior readiness of trains, including inspection-related cleaning tasks, when assigned and in accordance with safety procedures.

Mechanical & Troubleshooting
  • Perform basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting to identify and correct minor issues en route.
  • Communicate equipment concerns, failures, or abnormalities immediately to the Maintenance Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
  • Document operational defects, conditions, and repair requests accurately and promptly.

Communication & Compliance
  • Maintain disciplined radio communication with the Train Dispatcher using approved protocols.
  • Complete all required safety checklists, operating logs, equipment reports, and documentation.
  • Maintain professional appearance, conduct, and adherence to uniform standards at all times.

Safety & Compliance
  • Follow all safety rules, shop procedures, and operational protocols.
  • Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and report hazards or equipment defects immediately.
  • Reinforce safe practices while working around moving equipment, pit areas, and hazardous energy sources.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
  • Valid U.S. driver's license: Must be 18 or older to operate company vehicles.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Safety & Regulatory Requirements
  • Safety-Sensitive Position. Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must maintain qualification standards and comply with all applicable railroad operating and safety rules.

Skills & Abilities
  • Strong situational awareness and decision-making under changing conditions.
  • Mechanical aptitude preferred; willingness to learn railway operating and safety procedures.
  • Ability to work a non-standard schedule, including weekends, holidays, early mornings, evenings, extended hours, and peak seasonal periods as operational needs require.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Primarily confined to the locomotive cab during train operation, with additional time spent on platforms, in the depot area, and in The Shop for inspections and operational readiness.
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, diesel fumes, moving equipment, and public activity in an active railway operating environment.
  • Fast-paced, seasonal operation with moderate to high noise levels inside the cab and around active equipment.
  • Regular outdoor exposure during boarding, inspections, and platform duties.
  • Must be able to work in changing and sometimes extreme mountain weather conditions. High altitude environment (approximately 6,500-14,115 ft.) with reduced oxygen levels.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Regularly required to sit for long periods while operating the train. Frequent standing, walking, talking, and hearing.
  • Must be able to frequently walk, stand, and climb on uneven, sloped, rocky, snow- or ice-covered, or ballast-covered terrain, including safely mounting and dismounting equipment as required for inspections and operational duties.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly and 100 lbs. occasionally.
  • Vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus to safely monitor traffic flow and guest activity.
